JJ Redick and the Lakers coaching saga

If JJ goes to Duke and works for Trajan, that would make the Pistons much more fun to root for as a Duke fan :)

I'm also with those who think it could actually be the better job, weirdly enough. If Trajan hires him, that means he's his guy, and likely has at least a few years of runway (part of the Monty Williams situation was that once the Pistons fired Troy Weaver in the front office there was always the potential that the new GM, Trajan, would want his own hire running the show). The Pistons also have nowhere to go but up and zero expectations in the immediate term. In contrast, the Lakers have super unrealistic expectations to win NOW during LeBron's twilight years, even though its clear the roster is not good enough to do so. I fear the Lakers' hiring JJ could be a preemptive move to have a scapegoat when and if next season goes awry... you worry about a potential Adrian Griffin and Milwaukee type situation.

He’s most recently a Memphis Grizzlie, though he is an unrestricted free agent this summer. Former Piston though.

Re JJ, imo the Lakers are the better job.

Yeah, one of the first moves Troy Weaver made when he got the job was to trade Luke, who at the time was on the last year of his rookie deal I believe, to get an extra first round pick that I think turned into Saddiq Bey... who he then gave up on a couple years later and traded for James Wiseman. Considering both Kennard and Bey are much more productive NBA players right now that Wiseman, that sequence of moves is just one example of the poor decision making that cost Weaver his job and got the Pistons in this mess.

The Lakers job is one of the top two jobs in the game. Any issues coaching Lebron will be short term. I think if JJ could structure the Lakers deal to give him 4+ years of runway, it's probably a better move. Just my uneducated opinion. I do love Trajan.

ESPN Sources: JJ Redick has agreed on a four-year contract to become the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Rob Pelinka offered job this morning and Redick’s started working on a staff to surround himself with experience.

I'm gonna be the pessimist here and say both sides are going to end up regretting this move . . .

But I'd be happy to be wrong.

Redick will have to find a staff. He will have quite an adventure getting a better team built. Pat Riley 2.0
Last season or two for LeBron

Too bad JVG just took the job across town as an assistant for the Clippers. He would have been great for JJ. Even though there would also have been the “you took my job at espn” dynamic.

Will he add any Duke guys to his staff?

Wojo, Quinn Cook, Battier? The Landlord??? :)

Andre Dawkins is coaching HS ball in TX if he needs a shooting coach.

Worst case...it's a bust......and in two, three years he's out and back into broadcasting to never coach again. Still, he's been THE LAKERS COACH and 99.999% of all coaches never get to do that. It's arguably the premiere basketball job on the planet, given the Lakers cache.

There's no real downside or JJ here. The most recognizable franchise on the planet not named the Dallas Cowboys have chosen him to be their head coach before he's 40.

It's an amazing opportunity for JJ. I just worry that the expectations with the Lakers are going to be sky high, even if the talent is not up to the usual standards. Other than Phil Jackson, the Lakers haven't kept a coach longer than 3 seasons since they jettisoned Del Harris back in '99. Even Frank Vogel was canned 2 years after winning a title. Best of luck to JJ; I'll be rooting like crazy for him, but will absolutely not be surprised if he's back on ABC broadcasting the NBA Finals in 2 or 3 years.

I wonder if Coach K would be interested in being an unofficial assistant, something like a consigliere, for the young coach.

WOULD YOU TRUST A SURGEON WHO HAS NEVER OPERATED BEFORE?

WHAT ABOUT A PILOT WHO HAS NEVER FLOWN BEFORE?

Please advise. Asking for a friend newly hired in NBA
