JJ Redick and the Lakers coaching saga

Makes no sense for a coach with his accomplishments to put his rep at risk.

He was arguably one of the three most powerful people at Duke. Why would he want to work for Lakers' ownership and management?

Yeah, he has run his race. And won. His coaching journey is over. I think he knows that and also knows that he went out on top.

Having a tough time shaking the hunch that Coach K takes the job on like a 2-year deal, then leaves with LeBron.

I think this hunch is way off. This would make Coach K the oldest coach in NBA history by two years. He would be 79 at the end of this two year deal.

Oh man, that’s not good.

I guess having medium brown hair into your late 70s is not necessarily a hedge against an aging body.

It’s weird how some fake things seem so real. Millions of people dye their hair, like K, and we seem unable to discount that in considering their elder status.

Does he, or is that just an assumption? My grandfather died at 93 with dark brown hair, though some gray did start breaking through in his late 80s.

Here is the real reason Hurley returned to Storrs.

Cholesterol?

Forget being the next Mike Krzyzewski. In the next ten years, Dan Hurley will become the next Mike Ditka.

Funnily enough, none of those places are in the Storrs area... they're all around Hartford as far as I can tell. Now, UConn does do the weird thing where it plays half of its games in Hartford (and, in turn, away from its maximal home court advantage on campus... which is such a silly thing for a top tier basketball program to do), and a lot of my colleagues at UConn live around Hartford and commute the ~45 minutes to Storrs each day, so maybe Hurley lives nearer to Hartford or spends a bunch of time there, haha.

This may actually be part of the reason. Not that he would ever go to those places, or maybe he does and he loves them. But it’s the genuine love of the local community versus the what have you done for me lately fickle fandom in relatively isolated LA. He has already succeeded, and now he gets to choose how he wants to spend his life and I think it’s an admirable decision to choose lifestyle over a few more dollars, actually a lot more dollars.

Now let’s go and spoil that 3-peat by taking the title!
Go Duke! Nine F!

I can confirm that the offer of lifetime supply of J. Timothy wings and Frank Pepe's pizza are worth staying in the UConn job. Both excellent (although I prefer Sally's Apizza myself).

he was visibly having difficulty getting out on the court during the final four in 2022.

I recently saw him at the Emily K Mother's Day Ball (a fundraiser for the Emily K Center), and he looked about as spry as ever. I'm not discounting what you wrote in saying the above nor implying that walking around a ballroom and up some stairs to speak from a podium is exactly the same as the activity involved with coaching. Just that, based on what I observed, his gait and overall "health" appeared just fine that evening.

I prefer Modern but all three are excellent pizza places.

Is (or was) Mystic Pizza any good?

I never tried it. New Haven has some excellent pizza places. People love to argue about which is best, but they are all top-notch. I prefer Modern, but Pepe's white clam pizza is an epic experience, and Bar's mashed potato pizza is better than it has any right to be.

I'm wondering if Sayulita's (https://www.cantinasayulita.com/) has a deal for him. I follow him and his wife on Instagram and they are constantly there. So I know this is one restaurant that will be happy they are staying in the area.
