JJ Redick and the Lakers coaching saga

I recently saw him at the Emily K Mother's Day Ball (a fundraiser for the Emily K Center), and he looked about as spry as ever. I'm not discounting what you wrote in saying the above nor implying that walking around a ballroom and up some stairs to speak from a podium is exactly the same as the activity involved with coaching. Just that, based on what I observed, his gait and overall "health" appeared just fine that evening.

I remember seeing that Coach K had ankle replacement surgery (or some kind of reconstructive surgery) during last season. So maybe he was having issues with it during his final season and finally had something done about it and that's why he looked so spry at the Emily K event.

Is (or was) Mystic Pizza any good?

We went out of our way to go there when in the area and it was fine but not really worth the effort. And I didn’t really recognize it or the area from the movie (have no idea if it was even filmed there). Definitely not on the level of any of the “big 3” in New Haven.

We were in Mystic for a wedding about 15 years ago and ate there. I also don't remember it being very memorable (Mystic wasn't particularly memorable either - I liked the submarine museum in Groton and that was about it). I'm from the NY burbs and live in NYC so I am pretty particular about my pizza. Leaving behind northeast pizza might have influenced Hurley's decision.

The star of Mystic Pizza, Annabeth Gish, went to Duke - I think she was class of 93.

According to the front page of ESPN, Redick is interviewing today.
Just saw that. With the Celtics about to win their 18th title, Redick becoming the Lakers' coach would just add to my misery.

Disappointed in how bad the Lakers front office has been since Jennie took over. Like most people doing a poor job, she probably doesn't realize she is a big part of the dysfunction. It reminds me of the Dodgers under O’Malley and the Raiders under Davis.

As I understand it, focusing most of his attention on the Sphere in Vegas has distracted Dolan from his extensive tenure ruining the Knicks. So it is a win-win - cool new music venue and good Knicks team. Perhaps you can figure out a way to get her to do something similar.

Ha! Paging Phil Jackson...

On ESPN this morning, while commenting about the NBA Finals, Jay Williams just casually stated that JJ Redick will be the next coach of the Lakers. Not sure if it was a prediction or he actually knows something...

There was a restriction due to his broadcasting duties that any hiring couldn't be made official until after the season ended. (Seems like a stupid stipulation.)
Now that it's over, I'd expect we hear about it today.

No news out of Los Angeles, but is Detroit a player for JJ Redick now? I know the Woj Bomb is day-old news, but I included it for context.

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn

ESPN Sources: After one season, the Detroit Pistons have dismissed coach Monty Williams — who leaves with five years and $65M-plus left on his deal. New President Trajan Langdon will move to make his own coaching hire now.

Coach K at 50/1 odds? Wow, I could be a billionaire. I just have to put down $20 million on Mickie telling him, "Sure, those Detroit winters will be great for your hip. Let's leave Durham after 45 years and get a fresh start there."

Serious question - which would be the "smarter" move for JJ, assuming he gets a choice between the two?

I'm not sure I'd want to have the pressure cooker of the Lakers fan base and ownership. And fourteen Pistons wins leaves a LOT of room for improvement.
