JJ Redick and the Lakers coaching saga

"Massive"??? While I suspect his commenting and podcast deals likely put him into a 7-figure income, I suspect it is low 7-figures. I am confident he at least doubled his salary to take on the Laker job.
I don't remember the exact podcast I listened to (it may have been the Hoop Collective or the Lowe Post), but I heard from someone in the know confirm that he's basically taking a paycut to do this.

His job as a commentator alone paid him multiple millions over the past few years.

Meant to add this to the last post as an edit, but only 5 minutes to change posts now!!

His media company is quite large at this point. He has at least 3 podcasts that I can think of which are doing extremely well. The Old Man & the Three, Mind the Game, and the Dunker Spot are all big national podcasts with Huge advertising deals. They are partnered with Companies like Amazon, BMW, Wondery, and many others. Lebron's involvment was set to bring in even more lucrative deals going forward, because of the huge success of that podcast.

I don't think any team can be truly counted out, because injuries always happen and a major trade could shake things up, but I don't see a single western conference series where the Lakers have the best player. Or even 2 of a the best 5 players. Lebron is turning 40 this year, he and AD are both huge injury risks, and you're way too low on OKC. They are ridiculously stacked now with the addition of Caruso. They also still have 30 picks over the next 4 drafts to trade for the right superstar, whoever becomes available.

Dallas will improve, their core is young, and Lively should be set to become THE dominant defensive center in the NBA over the next 5 years. His potential is amazing, and any shooting he can add to his game would exponentially improve that team. Wembanyama is going to be the best player in the NBA in the next 2 years. I don't think that's hyperbole one bit. Jokic is probably the best until that happens, and Denver should be as good as ever, provided they can extend KCP. I'm also skeptical of any team with Gobert, but AE is going to be one the top 5 players in the league next season, and you can't count him out. That's a lot of young teams who are going to get better. Young teams have less injury issues, and I just don't trust AD and Lebron to stay healthy enough to make any noise in the postseason. The Lakers rely much too heavily on them.
I hope you’re right! 🙏

The Lakers are probably not my favorite team. 😉

Glad that JJ is getting the opportunity to coach the Lakers. Though he has never coached in the NBA, it doesn’t mean he won’t become a really good one. The man knows basketball! You go JJ

He also earned over $117M in his NBA career. I think he's doing okay.... everything is relative of course.

It's a pity -- I very much enjoyed his commentary during the Finals. He's a sharp guy.

On coaching -- does anyone else think Jason Kidd coached circles around Joe Mazzulla in the NBA Finals? He threw in some new wrinkles in Game 4 (Lively for 3!). The Celtics survived because they had five guys (six when Porzingis was healthy) who could all take turns leading the offense and can all play great D.

Nope, Joe Mazzulla had a very good series. He is clearly a better-than-average NBA coach now. And a champion.

Kidd is okay. But Luka Dončić almost carried him to a title. Without Luka, Dallas wouldn’t even have come remotely close to making the playoffs as an 8-seed, much less advancing all the way to the finals.

No, IMO when you lose a series 4-1, you can't claim you outcoached the other guy. Which is not to say Jason Kidd doesn't deserve a lot of credit. I don't know how much of the credit should go to Mazzulla vs Stevens, but Mazzilla deserved a lot of credit for pulling the right strings - or maybe for not pulling the wrong strings!

Plenty of credit to coach and GM.....they were dominant in the regular season, and dominant in the playoffs start to finish. Simply a great year for the franchise top to bottom.

The Celtics rarely panicked when they got behind. That is at least partially the coach. And bringing in Pritchard for that last second half court shot was pretty smart. So I'd say Mazzulla acquitted himself pretty well.

JJ is following a similar track laid down by another powerful figure. Achieve success in one area, use a prominent national media presence on a successful broadcast to convince people you are qualified for a position for which you have little to no experience, get electe,,,I mean hired for that position. If both men are successful at their current efforts, perhaps they will meet at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in the Fall of 2026 for a championship celebration catered by Burger King.

Joe Mazzulla has to be a hero in Beantown, bringing back the championship after so many years

That’s a horrifying scenario on many levels. 😉

JJ with a few fiery answers—and some profanity!—in his introductory press conference. And a brief skim of the Lakers subreddit looks like his presser was positively received by the fans.

(I don't think Los Angeles sports media has any idea what JJ went through as a player—I think he'll be able to handle the media very, very well as a coach.)

It seems a little incongruous to discount JJ’s chances based on his lack of experience while Joe Maz is still celebrating the title he won in his 2nd season. Quality tends to win out.

And as I read this I thought you were talking about Doug Gottlieb...alarmingly unqualified.
