JJ Redick and the Lakers coaching saga

Selfishly, I would be very sad if this happened, because I do enjoy everything he does in the sports media world, with his multiple podcasts, appearances on ESPN's talking head shows, and of course, calling games on ESPN's NBA broadcast.

i'm with you.....would rather him stay on the tube.....but......

Nba is probably the one league where a coach has the least impact. In mlb and nfl a great coach can make a team good. In nba it’s all about talent. Without top tier talent it doesn’t make much difference.

Based on listening to him on his various platforms for years now, being a head coach in the NBA is his dream job. I'm sure he would still have his ownership stake in 342 productions, but obviously he would no longer be podcasting. Hopefully he doesn't take Nekias Duncan and Steve Jones with him on his coaching staff, those guys are also great on the Dunker Spot ;)

Disagree, coaching is SO important in the league. It's just that there's a crazy number of elite coaches in the NBA, and it's ridiculously competitive. Of course you need the best talent to win at the highest level, but you can tell when teams have bad coaches. Look at the difference between Houston last year and Houston this year, with an upgrade at the head coach spot. Conversely, look at Doc Rivers, he's been failing with the best players for a long time. Erik Spoelstra is going to the finals regularly with dudes he picked up off the street a couple weeks ago.

Maybe NBA coaches have less impact than the players than the NFL, but what NFL coach is winning at the highest level without an elite QB and/or defense? Pat Mahomes was going to win multiple super bowls with almost any competent NFL head coach. You need talent and great coaching in any sport.

Interesting. I got the impression he was very intentionally building a media empire.

Agreed. He also has yoing kids. I'm surprised he wants the considerable stress that comes with an NBA coaching position.

Maybe he is already sick of listening to Doris Burke and arguing with Stephen A?

Obviously, or no NBA team would hire a head coach with so little coaching experience.

Not sure I could disagree more with this statement. For example, I think Spoelstra is worth 10 wins a year for the Miami Heat. Watch an NBA playoff series between two evenly matched teams - team with better coach almost always wins.

As for baseball, the Yankees won the 2009 WS in spite of Joe Girardi and his ridiculous handling of pitchers and the bullpen. Of course there are also guys like Bruce Bochy and Joe Torre who always seem to know the right buttons to push.

With the NFL, there's about 50 coaches on staff and many HC's do not have full defensive OR offensive responsibilities. Very tough job though.

Mods: can we fold this into the Blue Devils in the NBA 2023-2024 thread? Lindsey Harding interviewed for the Hornets job as well, and the news fit just fine there.

On the topic, I was just thinking about JJ Redick a few days ago, ranking his roles post-retirement in my mind (not including parent or husband, obviously):

1. Podcaster/interviewer
2. Game announcer
3. Studio analyst

That third one is a distant third, mostly because the format gives him the least time and control to convey a message. He's not bad at it at all, and I think he's pretty good in a "Now let's go to JJ Redick and see what he has to say" situation.

Agree, but look at the OKC Thunder. One great player, lot of really good players. Super coach.

I might even start rooting for the Hornets again. I still have that awful taste of Michael Jordan ownership.

GoDuke!
