This Week in the ACC - 2/10-2/16

Pitt tried to come back, but nope. Without Dunn for the rest of the season, they don’t have enough of anything. Capel looks calm, or maybe it's just the dull realization that his team’s only hope after tonight is to win out, including @ UofL.

SMU is in the driver’s seat, with home games left against Wake and Clemson. They’ve got balanced scoring tonight and through the season, including multiple 3-bombers.

This weekend's home game with Wake is big for SMU. The winner of that will be in the best spot to earn the ACC's 4th bid (assuming the conference can get 4 bids).

But beyond that, SMU really, really, really needs to beat Clemson at home on Feb 22nd (a week from Saturday). If they don't win that game they will enter the ACC tourney with... wait for it... 0 quad 1 wins. Zero. Nada. None. Zip. Their best win would be last night's home victory over a reeling Pitt club. After that, it would be the neutral court win over LSU (the worst team in the SEC).

SMU has done a fabulous job beating the teams they should... but they are yet to post a single win over a team that is even close to the bubble.

I could be wrong, but I don't this a team has ever gotten an at large bid without a single quad 1 victory.

Pitt rolled into Cameron at 12-2 (3-0). They had wins over WVU, Ohio State, and LSU, and looked like they might be the #2 team in the league. We beat them by 29 points and they have now lost 8 out of 10. Whatever Jeff is doing isn't working.

As for SMU, it is wild that you can play a full ACC schedule and only end up with 5 Q1 games. And by the way, Clemson is #27 in NET, so that game isn't guaranteed to be Q1. SMU may be ACC, but they have a mid-major profile: nice record, but a bunch of empty-calories wins, and they've gotten blown out in all of their Q1 games.

As a long-time reader of this forum (and a poster only recently), I am struck by the paucity of paticipation by fans of other ACC teams. There have been some contributors over the years. Some Virginia fans have posted fairly often in the last few years. But they have disappeared this year. It has seemed only PackWolf remains. The Lone Wolf as it were. So it is nice to see an SMU fan join the fray.
