This Week in the ACC - 2/10-2/16

I like Steve Forbes and think he's a pretty good coach. But man, at some point he has to answer for his teams falling apart at the worst times.

2022 - Thought to be on the right side of the bubble at the end of the regular season in which he was crowned ACC COY. Lose to #114 BC in the ACCT and miss the Tournament.

2024 - Thought to be in good shape for the tournament after beating Duke, sitting at 18-9. Lose the next 3 to #118 ND, #58 VT, and #123 GT (at home) to miss the Tournament.

2025 - Won 9 of 11 to put themselves in with a chance to make the Tournament. Blow 16 point lead to #79 FSU at home. Tournament TBD, but they lack quality wins, and the "at least they have no bad losses!" part of their resume just went poof.

The Athletic's Brendan Marks on UNC:

"UNC’s body language at Pitt, at Duke and at Clemson is that of a team that, frankly, has given up. Some of that is chemistry issues — let’s just say, expect to see some departures this offseason — but more so, it’s a team that looks like it has had its spirit broken through a combination of close losses, almost-comebacks, and most recently, flat-out blowouts. No decision has been made on Davis’ future yet, but if the Tar Heels continue deteriorating like they have in the past 10 days — and if fan apathy keeps growing at its current rate — then keeping Davis for a fifth season might become a tougher sell."

I'm certainly not giving them a Duke win, but maybe some other ACC teams can catch a few losses to help HD's job security. He's the gift that keeps on giving in my book.

This gives me the opportunity to revisit my all-time favorite "time and circumstance" error. Check out how UConn's Roscoe Smith manages the clock at the end of regulation in this tied game vs Texas.

The icing on the cake: If you look closely, you'll notice that while Smith's "shot" ends up missing the cylinder, it lands squarely in the cone.
Fun fact is 11-4 vs UConn

They have six winnable games before they play us and can build a head of steam. Or they can lose a few and turn out the lights. This is where we see if they have pride or if they’ve packed it in.

The new GM will save the day!

Can't wait till Cheat bosses invent a random complaint against Hubert and fire him. They then claim it wasn't about wins and losses, but lack of adherence to the Carolina Way.

Similar to the Doh dismissal.

Reason has finally prevailed, and ESPN has now dropped the Heels tourney hopes like rocks. (The only locks in the conference are us, Clemson, and Louisville; SMU is the only other team that doesn't "have work to do".) Paywalled article, but here's the fun part.

... Making matters worse, they were one of the biggest losers when ESPN Analytics adjusted its forecast model ...
You mean they finally got rid of that Skipper flag?

I’m predicting a new banner in the Dean Dome after the season:

2024-25 ACC Champions*

*with starting lineup under 6’6”

The coaches ahead of Scheyer on the list of longest-tenured ACC coaches are Grant, Brownell, Keatts, Davis, Capel, Young, and Forbes. Given recent performances, does anyone in that group outside of Brownell feel completely comfortable with their job status? Outside of Grant, I could see all of the non-Brownell coaches being given one more year, but it would not surprise me if any of them were let go. I hope that Capel and Davis are back next year, for different reasons obviously. In any event, I'm glad that Scheyer is our guy.

All of the above is true... it is impossible to overstate how poorly Wake handled the final 30 seconds of the game. I am not talking how they executed -- which was also abysmal -- but the lack of basketball common sense that was on display.

I'm not saying it is all on the head coach, but a good bit of it needs to fall to him. How does a 22% 3-point shooter fire from the logo when you are down 1 with 12 seconds left in the game?!?! How do you not run the clock down to almost zero before taking the last shot? How do you leave a guy wiiiide open from 3 when you are up 2 in the final ten seconds?
And just to piggyback a little here, with as atrocious and embarrassingly abysmal as Wake handled the final minute and some change, none of this even mentions that Wake blew a 16 POINT LEAD with 8 minutes to go!

This guy states the obvious about UNC (listed as "next four out"):

North Carolina got drilled at No. 23 Clemson on Monday and is now 1-10 in Quad 1 games, which shows they scheduled hard but also shows they aren't capable of winning the types of games you would face in the NCAA Tournament. The only reason the Tar Heels are on this page is because of their brand name (which the committee won't admit), but if this resume was assigned to a team like Georgia Tech they would be nowhere near this page.

Despite their poor performance last night, I don’t see Forbes going anywhere for the foreseeable future. Still a huge upgrade over Manning and Bzdelick.

No disagreement that he's an upgrade over Manning and Bzdelik, although those are both pretty low bars. I think he's probably a good coach and is back at Wake next year. Hopefully he can turn things around because I enjoy it when Wake and NCSU are competitive in the ACC (as long as they always lose to Duke!). However, this is his 5th year at Wake and so far he has 0 NCAA tournament appearances. There's no way a coach goes 5 years at either Duke or uNC without making the tournament and keeps his job. Davis seems to be on the hot seat for being at risk of missing the tournament for the second time in three years, but his other two years were a national title game appearance and a 1 seed/Sweet 16 and he's had 20+ wins and a winning record in the ACC every season.
