This Week in the ACC - 2/10-2/16

My sister and niece are going to be in Cameron today for the Duke game. My niece is a sophomore at VT.
Seeing the score of the UVA/VT game (in Blacksburg), she made a wise choice.

I don't have time to make all these hype videos for bad ACC teams based on the vintage Florence Warner (RIP) jingle. "Hello Dayton, Hello Dayton UNC Pitt UNC Wake Forest SMU Wake Forest loves you!" (Youtube WDTN if you're curious.) I might just stick with UNC since it seems to be good every year Hubert is there.

Things getting desperate at Notre Dame : ESPN reported that there were more Louisville fans cheering at the game in South Bend than Irish fans.

I believe Shrewsberry will get it turned around in South Bend. Not final four level but make the big dance level on a fairly regular basis.

I hate hate hate hate hate to say this... but it is all dependent on NIL. Can he keep a star like Burton? Can he keep or land a couple other good players to complement his stud guard? I'm sure he can keep his son on the cheap, which is a huuuuge help. While I don't think NIL is the only determinant of whether a team has a good roster, only a fool would say it does not play a significant role. And the reality is that there is only so much Shrewsbery can do without a good roster.

I was told that Clemson upped its NIL spend by a million dollars last summer. That is how it was able to both keep guys like Hunter and Schieffelin and also add Lakhin and Zachery. I hate that things are that transactional, but it is what it is at this point.

I'm not saying NIL is the end-all, be-all of being a good team. I mean, Carolina most assuredly outspent Clemson this season and yet there is little comparison in the quality of those two teams. St. Mary's is #21 in KenPom even though they likely spend a fraction of what Kansas (#16), Kentucky (#19), Louisville (#25), and UCLA (#26) invest in NIL... but it sure is a lot easier to be competitive if your NIL is competitive.

Without a bigger commitment to NIL, the ACC will continue to lag waaay behind the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12. Duke and Carolina are likely the only schools who spend more than the top 7-8 programs in the SEC and there are at least 4-5 teams in both the Big Ten and B12 who spend more than anyone in the ACC.

Well, we know that Notre Dame has NIL money. I think the question boils down to, are they going to be a football school and nothing else?
