NCAA Football 2024 (national discussion)

In the biggest comeback in Top 5 history GA takes the lead 34-33.m with 2:30 left. GA had the lead for .13 . Alabama scored on a long pass play and is ahead by 7.

Iā€™ve seen these matchups for many years now. The outcome is almost always the same: Alabama wins these close games in the end. I see no reason to believe otherwise tonight.

Generally preferred Bama but no real rooting interest, which made it a great game to watch - much less stress. Glad I didn't turn it off at halftime.

Undefeated FBS teams as of now, for no particular reason.

5-0: BYU, Duke, Indiana, Miami, Texas

4-0: Alabama, Army, Iowa State, James Madison, Liberty, Missouri, Navy, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Tennessee, UNLV

Love that my two favorite college football teams are both 5-0! I don't think that has ever happened before.

Honestly as great as the Bama game was (only saw highlights), I couldnā€™t muster the energy to care given the new CFB playoff format. The game is effectively useless in determining a champion. Both teams are in. The only impact is on seeding. If itā€™s not Duke playing, I just donā€™t really care as much now unless (A) itā€™s a major team going to lose in a big upset (like a UK vs Ole Miss, or NIU vs ND) or (B) itā€™s late season and it determines a playoff spot (Iā€™m assuming I will care, though obviously itā€™s the first year so remains to play out). And this follows a fervor in prior years where I would 100% find a way to get eyes on the game knowing one team was going to get knocked out effectively and their season ended.

I wonder how the ratings change this year for the big games. They just donā€™t mean even close to as much as they once did. Itā€™s a bit like the MBB regular season. Itā€™s hard to care about Kentucky-Kansas or Michigan State-UConn if theyā€™re all going to be in anyway (I know thatā€™s not something everyone here feels, but am sure Iā€™m not alone)

CFB regular season was the best. This is the first time Iā€™ve actually felt inclined to just say meh on a major game and just check the score after

I donā€™t see how a football fan could not get up for that game.

It was truly spectacular.....and predictable that it would be. BUT... give it two or three more seasons....of players abandoning teams, law suits, a rapidly shrinking pool of teams that even have a chance, etc. We might see less people getting up for less games, period.

ā€œWe may be going to hell in a bucket,ā€™but at least Iā€™m enjoying the ride.ā€

Iā€™m a pretty jaded guy. But I could not watch that game and think ā€œman, this will suck in a few years.ā€ It was a fantastic sporting event, end of sentence.

As long as there are tailgates for partying with friends and family, traditional rivalries to get us revved up, marching bands to stir our memories, mascots to cheer or jeer, and championships to be won, lots of people will continue to get up for college football games. Count on it.
There is certainly a lot of truth in what you say. However, CFB is on a spiral that is going to demand ever increasing revenues, and I don't see that necessarily happening. People will care until they don't. We see a good number of comments on DBR about how people care less than they used to. I don't think that number nationwide is insignificant. I also don't think it will manifest for a couple of years because there is simultaneously a bit of a bump in interest due to gambling and due to new conference alignments and the resulting intrigue - as well as the expanded playoff format.

I believe however, with maybe 60% confidence, that the deep GAF factor - so critical to college sports - is damaged, and that will, I believe, manifest in a few years.
