NCAA Football 2024 (national discussion)

ETA: he’s going to use his red shirt and sit out the rest of the season. Seems to also redefine what red shirt actually means. Can you use a redshirt as a remedy to what is tantamount to a contract dispute?
I believe you can play in up to 3 games and still redshirt, regardless of how much you played in those 3 games. So, this is a perfectly legitimate move on his part.

I would also imagine that if some UNLV booster can come up with the NIL this kid was promised, but never paid, he can change his mind and return to the team.

Yes, I don't think anyone disputes that. But man, this is disorienting. We are well down the road of the "college" in college football meaning little more than the best players the college can buy. I will continue to pull for my Devils, but only so long as we don't go too far down that road. Not that I have any problem with college players getting paid, I don't. I just already have my interest in professional football satiated by the NFL, which actually has rules allowing for fair competition.

So, does anyone have an opinion as to how Kalen DeBoer is doing thus far as head coach of Alabama? He’s only replacing the greatest coach in college football history, that’s all. No pressure. 😉

I’m not only talking about how he’s done on the sidelines during games — his demeanor, decision-making, adjustments, etc. — but also his game preparation, recruiting, hiring of assistants, relationship-building with influential donors, how he is perceived by administrative staff, his relationship with the media, etc.

Being a head coach of a major college football program these days is just so all-encompassing and has so many dimensions that it’s almost unbelievable. Nick Saban was very very good at all of those various responsibilities.

DeBoer has his hands full, that’s for sure.

Is he going to class still? It sounds to me that contractually, if nothing was signed, then he doesn't even have to bother with a redshirt. He can drop out, go to another school and retain all the eligibility in the world.

Because Sluka was still completing his degree at Holy Cross, he could not sign a NIL contract, typically done with booster-backed third parties called collectives that serve a school's athletes — until after he enrolled at UNLV later in the year, Cromartie said.

Sluka did not join the team until preseason practice in August. No written contract was ever put in place, Cromartie said.

"NCAA rules do not allow players to play for two schools within the same season" from the Yahoo article. How long before that rule is thrown out?

4 games. Yes, he could return as long as he didn't officially drop out of school. No mention in the articles of whether his scholarship gets revoked, but I imagine by now the payments to the academic side would be already made and nonrefundable.

And down goes Ole Miss. maybe UGA’s close game last week with Kentucky wasn’t such a bad game by the Dawgs.

Wow did Michigan get lucky today at home vs. the Gophers. Blew a 24-3 lead, Minnesota scores to make it 27-24 and then recovers an onsides kick only to have the zebras call them for offsides which replays show was not offsides. Not reviewable and Michigan escapes.

My 10 year old was unknowingly fascinated by the name of the Michigan QB and was saying it a lot. Grandma is a Michigan alum and he told my wife to tell her about him.
