NCAA Football 2024 (national discussion)

So the Duke-UNC game means little, because it doesn’t have Championship Game ramifications?

You can hate on the sport if you want, fine. But I truly feel sorry that you are not getting joy out of this weekend’s games. They were fantastic IMHO.

As a guy living in Dawg country, with a daughter who went to Alabama, I can tell you that hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people — let alone the players — thought there was a lot riding on that UGA-UA game.

Go to Alabama and tell them that the Iron Bowl doesn’t mean anything. Or Michigan when they play tOSU. Or UGA when they go to Texas and Tennessee. Good luck.

But maybe what they say in the SEC is true — “it just means more.”

Yeah, someone clearly needs to watch more Dr Pepper commercials…

There's always one turd in every punch bowl. Or as the saying goes, "don't yuck my yum."

How was my Saturday? Well, let me recap the results . . .

I got to attend the UNC at Duke game and witness a fabulous comeback as the Blue Devils snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

I got to watch most of the Georgia at Alabama game and see a phenomenal comeback as the Dawgs still managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I got to watch some of the FSU at SMU game and enjoy the spectacle of the Semis not merely being "conquered," but humiliated yet again.

Soooooo, . . . Duke wins a rivalry thriller . . . Georgia loses a rivalry heartbreaker . . . and FSU loses in even more embarrassing fashion.

Lord, I do love college football -- for this week, at least.

I care about Duke because it’s my school and I love the team. And I’m not saying that other people shouldn’t care (if I went to Bama or UGA or had a family connection, I would obviously be all in - same way I am for Duke). I’m just making a personal comment that despite the fact that I am a fairly rabid CFB fan (as has been borne out by idk how many of my posts here), I’m just saying that the lack of real meaning in these games relative to last year is wearing on me. For OSU or Bama or UGA or Texas, the games against each other now mean a lot less than they did. It’s not effectively do-or-die, loser’s-season-is-over like it was in the past. Therefore for me at least, it’s less “must see”. It’s a personal observation. Feel free to disagree

Note I also would prefer I didn’t feel this way and watched it live (obviously, it was a good game). Just throwing out there given I found it a weird feeling and on topic with this thread

I think when the end of the regular season comes, there will be a lot more people watching on the edge of their seat than in the past, because there will be a lot more teams who have a chance to play themselves into or out of the playoff. And I think the playoff games themselves will have more people paying attention, as compared with bowl games that are just on in the background while people go back for seconds on Aunt Midge's pecan pie.

100% on the playoffs and likely 100% on the overall eyeballs when more teams are in contention (if you’re a PSU fan for example, your season often ends in Oct. when you lose to OSU and/or Meechigan; now even if/when you lose those two, you’re still going to be in it, continuing fan attention in place of what would otherwise have been apathy for 4-5 more weekends, with the bonus that those fans will also watch the other teams that are “on the bubble” for an at-large spot).

That said, I think it’s an open question for more neutral fans regarding the match-ups between big names that are virtual locks to get in (particularly if those games are early in the season). OSU-Michigan was always must watch TV, as a playoff spot was basically on the line. Same with the conference championship game for the SEC. Will people tune in to the same degree if they know everyone is getting in regardless?

Overall numbers will definitely be up I believe. The pie is growing due to the “on the bubble” teams concept noted. However, I can’t imagine the top games of prior years with truly eye-popping numbers (e.g., Bama-UGA, Bama-Texas, OSU-UM) will see an increase in viewership given the games have less meaning. It should be flat at best I would think. You’re just going to be able to have more of them every year because of conference consolidation. So instead of say, 3 games with 17mm eyeballs each (around where those games often land), you’ll have 6 games with 12mm eyeballs each, coming out ahead. And obviously this doesn’t factor in the playoffs themselves, which will all be “must watch” instead of the more meaningless bowl games.

For the casual fan though that loves the survive-and-advance mentality of the CFB regular season, it just won’t be as meaningful, and you’ll be inclined to watch a handful of the greater number of mega-games-with-less-meaning instead of the scarcer number of mega-games-with-incredibly-high-meaning. The regular season is just not as meaningful

It’s the classic MBB regular season issue. Sure I’ll watch the Champions Classic if I can because it’s good teams playing. But it doesn’t really mean all that much in the grand scheme when we know most will make the tournament and be high seeds, so it’s not “must watch” TV for me

And your Gators were off... that's almost like a win for them, isn't it? Ha!

Tennessee (4) this week, then Kentucky, Georgia (5), Texas (2), LSU (13), and Ole Miss (12) before wrapping up with the fading Noles. The SEC is a gauntlet! Florida's schedule over the next 6 weeks is arguably harder than winning the playoff would be.

What brain thrusts, and I use that term loosely, thinks Clemson or FSU would do well with that schedule?

It was the most-watched regular-season prime-time game since 2017, when Alabama-Florida State on the season's opening weekend averaged 12.3 million. Saturday's Alabama-Georgia matchup was also ESPN's most-streamed regular-season game.

(I was definitely one of them.)

(I was definitely one of them.)

Especially impressive given that much of East Georgia and the Florida panhandle (a/k/a More South Alabama) was without power and could not see the game.

I don't even really think it's arguable.

^^ and Kentucky is no joke. Other than getting blown out by the Gamecocks, they've been very tough. This weekend was not a fluke (although I will continue to kick Lane Kiffin while he is down because Lane Kiffin).
