2024 Olympics - Men's Basketball - Gold!

The game was basically not in doubt the last 10 minutes. I can't understand why you bench an All-Pro in that situation. Give him some PT just to get used to the reffing and venue if nothing else. Same with Halliburton.

You could say it that way. Or say that it would be ridiculous to drop Tatum into garbage time and risk injury.

My guess is he is setting one of the vets up for taking the bench in later games. If the first team all-NBA guy can do it, so can everyone else.

Also, demeaning. We'll see next game whether the best NBA American player and its only 1st team All NBA is in the starting lineup.

Not that school affiliation should matter, but I am sure Grant, Adam Silver and Gen. Martin Dempsey have personal opinions.
Tatum really wasn't playing very well in the exhibitions. With Durant going like he was, it's really not surprising. And he wasn't the only one; Haliburton sat too.

Stephen A has some words for Steve Kerr.

Turn the volume down if there are tender ears nearby.
I usually don’t care for Steven A., but in this case he is right. And sorry, but I don’t buy the argument upthread that maybe he didn’t want to take a chance that Tatum would get hurt….that would apply to those who played as well. I usually am not so skeptical, but something is fishy here.

Or the argument voiced here that 28 YO Jayson can't compete with Old Man Mose I and II. C'mon!

Sorry, I do not buy Kerr's argument. You do not bring a top player who committed and not play him a single minute. This was intentional and not sure what he has to gain by this but going forward (though I can see what he can lose) I would be worried about players not wanting to join because they would end up bench warmers. Not good optics.

If the NBA went back to this style they might get half there fans back that they lost when Jordan retired. I know I would watch more.

I would be far more interested if defense was again something that NBA focused on. NBA isn't quite basketball as i know and like. Weird foul calls, tons of travel etc.

Yes. But Lebron and KD are absolutely dominant in the international game. They both can just completely take over.

Can Tatum do that too? Maybe. Likely. But the proven veterans are going to get the nod. Tatum will probably be a part of Team USA for at least another decade. It's quite possibly the last harrah for Tatum and Lebron.

Sure but you do not even put him in for 5-10 minutes in a game that was already decided? To me, it is weird.

Yeah, I mean Tatum is not getting paid. He's doing this for his country and for the experience. In a 26 point game I think you've got to find him 6-8 minutes. It is a bad message trying to attract players in the future.

It's embarrassing to be that good and not even get in the game, especially when he's an all-NBA player and two of his lesser-talented teammates get minutes.

So next game... Tatum starts??? Or at least, first sub off the bench??? Can Durant and Tatum play together? Embid/James/Curry/Durant/Tatum?

(I've never done this before... predicting lineups... )

Tatum led the Celtics in minutes played in the regular season and the playoffs. He played as late as anyone in the league this season and he then gave up his summer to be a part of this team. He has shown himself to be a strong international player as he was USA second leading scorer at 15ppg in the last Olympics.

To "reward" a player like that by leaving him on the bench... Steve Kerr should really be ashamed.

Frankly, not playing Tyreese Halliburton is pretty unforgiveable too.

I just wanted to wish a hearty congrats to all the ACC programs who have players playing in the Olympics! It is an impressive list --

  • Duke: RJ Barrett (Canada), Jayson Tatum (USA)
  • Georgia Tech: Jose Alvarado (Puerto Rico)
  • Louisville: Carlik Jones (South Sudan)
  • Miami : Davon Reed (Puerto Rico)
  • NC State: Lorenzo Brown (Spain)
  • Virginia Marial Shayok (South Sudan)
  • Virginia Tech: Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Canada)
  • Wake Forest: Dinos Mitoglou (Greece)
and, of course...
  • UNC: Kai Toews (Japan)
I'm sorry. My bad. That should be...
  • UNC Wilmington: Kai Toews (Japan)

If you want to play on the biggest stage, with the whole world watching, it is abundantly clear where you should play your college basketball... and where you shouldn't.

This. You have a guy that gets paid millions to play hoops. Then you ask him to give up part of his extra short summer vacation to play more hoops, for free. Mr. Kerr, you'd best find a way to get Jayson on the court the rest of the way. Tyreese too.

Are we allowed to discuss the Japan-France game because it is a good one?
Absolutely. This is not a US-only thread.

Come on folks, in the words of our Sage Advisor Aaron Rodgers, "relax."

It's one game. If Tatum doesn't log at least 15 minutes in the next game I'll wonder what's going on. No need to get stressed about who didn't get subbed in when LeBron and KD are playing almost perfect basketball for a game.
