2024 Olympics - Men's Basketball - Gold!

Coach Kerr's decision to not play Jayson Tatum (or Tyrese Haliburton). Tatum said after the game that he was healthy, and Kerr said, "I went with the combinations that made sense. That was for tonight. He handled it well. He’ll make his mark."

I mean, Tatum was playing competitive basketball later than everyone except Jrue.

Tatum and Haliburton both had weak showings during the pre-olympic games. Tatum was weak on defense in particular. Haliburton was bad in aall facets of the pre-olympic games. When they do get in, they will need to show they can contribute.

Nah. The real reason.

The problem for Tatum is positional overlap; he mostly plays the 4, but unfortunately for him so do LeBron and KD and he’s not taking minutes from either of them. So where does he get minutes? He doesn’t provide the shooting of Steph or Booker, nor the size of Embiid or AD, nor the point of attack defense of Jrue or White. So he most realistically would take minutes from either Ant or Bam, which I guess will be matchup and situation dependent. I hope he gets his chance but FIBA rules and this team’s composition doesn’t optimize his skill set (one on one scoring).

Damning with faint praise? Tatum had a better NBA season and better playoffs than any of the players you mention, three of whom are the oldest to ever play for the USA. Jayson will probably get his 20 mins going forward.

Yes. But Lebron and KD are absolutely dominant in the international game. They both can just completely take over.

Can Tatum do that too? Maybe. Likely. But the proven veterans are going to get the nod. Tatum will probably be a part of Team USA for at least another decade. It's quite possibly the last harrah for Tatum and Lebron.

Real talk, Kerr "felt like an idiot" not playing Tatum.
Yeah, that phrase is getting repeated a lot, but it was clear from the full video that Tatum not playing was a) planned, and b) Kerr still thinks it was the right thing to do. Given what Durant and LeBron were doing, it's hard to say he's wrong.
