2024 Olympics - Men's Basketball - Gold!

JasonEvans

Host, The Duke Basketball Roundup
In an effort to keep conversations a bit more focused, the DBR Mods have decided to segregate all Olympic conversations into three threads.

1- Men's Basketball - After all, we are a basketball community and there are basketball Dukies in this event in Tatum, RJ, Maluach, and (kinda) Deng. This will include both the 5x5 and 3x3 tournaments.

2- Women's Basketball - See above but sub the names Grey and Lawson.

3- General Olympic stuff - This will be for all the other events and competitions happening around the games.

We ask that you endeavor to put posts in the right place.

Thanks,

-DBR Moderation team

Dan Patrick interviewed Grant Hill on Friday. The video:

It's all worth watching, but I'll quote a small portion:

"Gregg Popovich has a saying that you always want to have the appropriate fear of your opponents, particularly in international basketball and international competition. You may look across the court and see guys, well, you know, they're role players in the NBA, or what have you, but in FIBA basketball, they play at another level, and it's a different style of game. It's officiated differently... If you were to make an assumption, you may say that in the NBA, it's officiated sort of in favor of the offensive player. In FIBA, it's officiated in favor of the defensive player."

Yeah, that’s a pretty succinct description of why I don’t expect the US team to win gold this year. At some point there will be a close game, and the US team will fall back on the plays they are comfortable with. LeBron will try to drive to the hoop to retake the lead, and that’s not a winning play in FIBA. Too much help defense, too physical defense.

I just watched that CNBC interview of Grant Hill on youtube from the front page. That guy is a stud. I mean, we all know he's been a stud for as long as we've known him, but, wow, he's taken it to a new level.

In this time of political discourse and national disagreement, I really wish some of our guys, like Grant, would consider going down the political path. Our country really need smart dudes like that to get a positive message out. He always has been, and always will be a unifier.

A few months back, I was talking to a former Georgetown player, and told him I went to Duke. He groaned, and then admitted he had quite a few friends who played at Duke, among them Grant Hill. I told him that Grant will always be my favorite Duke player. He said, "Everything you've heard about him -- he's even better than that."

Didn’t see the South Sudan game. Nice they got a will. Khaman with an unremarkable stat line. 6 mins and 2 points. Anyone with more color?
