Stanford, Cal, and SMU - Welcome to the ACC

Stanford's women's basketball star Cameron Brink said yesterday that one of the factors in her declaring for the draft rather than returning for another year was that she doesn't want to travel across the country as a result of the ACC's expansion. The headline is a bit misleading, there were multiple factors cited and the travel was just one of them, but I do wonder how much this will come into play moving forward. For the current ACC members it's not as big of a change - as previously discussed the trips out to the west coast will be infrequent and many of the programs already travel during the out of conference season - but for the CA schools and SMU it's a huge change.

Hope the WNBA team that drafts her never has to travel far. Playing overseas might not be a good idea either. 😏

It’s not that big of a change for SMU, where the AAC went from San Antonio to Annapolis.

I mean, there is more travel in the WNBA than in the ACC (even with expansion)... but whatever.

They also don’t tend to get as nice accommodations in the WNBA, alas.

But Brink was a top ten if not top five pick anyway so she was going no matter what. Travel was the least of it

My impression is that SMU would much rather travel to play Duke, Carolina, and the California schools than travel to play current conference foes like Navy, South Florida, and Charlotte.

It’s a bigger deal for Cal and Stanford. I think the football and bball skeds are straightforward, but I did a quick search and didn’t see a definitive plan for their non-revenue sports (ie, the sports that probably don’t charter airplanes). I assume some of their sports will join west coast conferences?

Water polo (both genders) and men’s volleyball will stay in the MPSF. For just about every other sport, the ACC is either a push or a step up in level of competition.

Now it's getting real. The SMU practice court:

SMU is having a party to celebrate joining the ACC on July 1. Per the link:

“All of the ACC costumed mascots – from the Duke Blue Devil to Louie the Cardinal – will visit Dallas landmarks throughout the day for photo ops with SMU’s beloved mascot, Peruna. Watch for the mascots on SMU social media, as well as at the Dallas Arboretum, Fair Park, Reunion Tower and other spots around town. They’ll join the party at the Happiest Hour, where the ACC Network will be broadcasting live.”

Road games are going to be a pain.
Yea, but I'm guessing that for Duke fans who want to travel to watch their Blue Devils play, going to Dallas or the SF area (despite the longer distances) will be better than going to Blacksburg, VA.

Back when people read newspapers and I wrote for the Chronicle, the players LOVED road trips....I'd rather play at Cal or Stanford than at Clemson.

I wonder if schools will (logically) schedule Cal and Stanford on the same trip. The PAC 10 really had a good geographic distribution for that, two teams in SoCal, two in NoCal, two in Oregon and two in Washington, two in AZ.

Getting strong PTSD vibes from 12/21/00...Tiger Woods in the front row...I guess that season ended ok, though.

I think that game was a neutral site in San Fran or Sacramento. Duke has never played at Maples.

Since the ACC is doing the schedules, I expect every Cal/Stanford basketball pairing to be Th/Sat, Fri/Sun, or Sat/Mon depending on TV. They already paired off the schools. Duke/UNC, NCSU/Wake, UVA/VT, etc.
