Stanford, Cal, and SMU - Welcome to the ACC

The ACC Network will begin broadcasting live from SMU’s entry party in Uptown Dallas in about an hour. (SMU’s admission happened at midnight last night; Cal and Stanford will be ACC members on August 2.)

As a northern CA resident looking forward to seeing Duke here for some local contests. Duke football played at Stanford one time that I recall. I think it was in the 80s and won 13-12.

You knew there were going to be some ridiculous travel situations, and Duke volleyball gets one: a weekend in early November at SMU on Friday and at Pitt on Sunday.

Burnsie-- I get your point, but I have a different calculation. For ordinary mortals (i.e. without charter flights) my calculation is that flights between 1-3 hours seem about the same, given departure for the airport 2 hrs. before flight time and arrival at actual destination an hour or so after flight.

5-6 hour flights, however, between coasts seem quite a bit longer. RDU to Dallas is 2.5-3.0 hours.

I came across some news today about Shake Milton being part of the Knicks-Nets trade for Mikal Bridges, and I recalled that Milton went to SMU.

I feel like there's a Channing Frye/Shake Milton joke to be made, but I can't quite put it together. Anyway, it made me wonder which NBA players attended our newest ACC schools, currently and historically. Click the school name for a complete list.

SMU
Current: Shake Milton
Historic: Sterling Brown, Jon Koncak, Semi Ojeleye

California
Current: Jaylen Brown, Jaylon Tyson
Historic: Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Kevin Johnson, Jason Kidd

Stanford
Current: Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez, Dwight Powell, Ziaire Williams
Historic: Josh Childress, Brevin Knight, Adam Keefe

I could have gone a lot more historic, but I stuck with names I knew from the 1990s and forward.

Seeing Semi Ojeleye's name up there reminded me that all 3 schools have been a transfer destination for former Duke players. Ojeleye transferred from Duke to SMU after the 2015 championship. Jamal Boykin transferred from Duke to Cal in 2007. And about a month ago, Jaylen Blakes transferred from Duke to Stanford.

There are undoubtedly more connections, like Neal Begovich transferring from Stanford to Duke last year, and Sean Stewart's father, Michael "Yogi" Stewart, playing at Cal from 1993-1997. Going back further, the McCaffrey-Sime family tree has multiple Duke and Stanford representatives.

GoDuke has head-to-head histories with all 3 schools, including past games and dates. Duke is 3-1 against SMU, 2-2 against Cal, and 1-2 against Stanford.

Surprisingly, American has four nonstop flights a day from DFW to PGH. But a charter from Love Field, which is literally right down the street from SMU, would be a lot more efficient.
Since it's not a huge attendance sport, I would not be surprised to see those games played early enough on Friday to ensure a late night flight to PIT. Both are AA friendly. I've seen very weird AA departure and landing times.

Part national outreach, part Heisman campaign.

And now Cal Legends has reportedly moved to the brand marketing side, posting up funds for billboards in ACC country (this billboard below is in Charlotte, North Carolina—Cal will play in-state on November 8th in Wake Forest). Sources confirm that there are several other billboards either already set up or being setup in other major ACC East Coast markets.

It might seem strange to do this type of marketing across the coast, but Cal has large alumni groups on the East Coast that have rarely been touched. Cal alumni outreach has been marginal at best in the past decades, so one of the most important ways to raise awareness for the brand is to try and activate those groups and let them know the Bears are coming out East regularly.

Pictured are Cal head coach Justin Wilcox and star running back Jaydn Ott, who was among the nation's best rushers last season. He and UNC's Omarion Hampton will likely be ACC preseason favorites at that position.

With the ACC Kickoff taking place in Charlotte -- not far from that Cal billboard pictured above -- you can see the full press conferences of SMU, Cal, and Stanford. (You will need access to ACC Network through your provider.)

YouTube's ACC Digital Network has some quick clips of SMU head coach Brett Lashlee (here, here, and here); Cal head coach Justin Wilcox here; and Stanford head coach Troy Taylor here.

They all did better introducing themselves to a new conference than first-year UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster, who crashed and burned at the Big Ten media event. A must-see:

Come on, it wasn't that bad. I am sure there were lots of media members who had no idea that UCLA is in LA.

Bwahahahaha!

The utter lack of preparation on his part, to not have anything remotely meaningful to say other than "we're in LA" is just appalling.

Looks like another perfect day…

As a Panthers fan I’m just happy he didn’t get injured during the presser. I feel the same way every time Dan Morgan speaks.

1971, in a battle of 3-0 teams, Duke traveled to Stanford and won 9-3 in spite of injuries to Jones and Bosetti. Duke jumped into the rankings; however, the injuries were too much to overcome as the Devils finished 6-5.
