Stanford, Cal, and SMU - Welcome to the ACC

1971, in a battle of 3-0 teams, Duke traveled to Stanford and won 9-3 in spite of injuries to Jones and Bosetti. Duke jumped into the rankings; however, the injuries were too much to overcome as the Devils finished 6-5.
Great win.

Sumner: A Look Back at Duke's 1971 Win Over Stanford

Having come up empty against Hanenberg and Searl, Bunce thought he'd test Jackson on Stanford's second possession. Big mistake. "Ernie didn't look like a football player," Searl recalls. "He might have weighed 160. But he was a great athlete, he was fearless and he hit hard."

Jackson picked off an errant Bunce pass and weaved across the field 54 yards for a touchdown.

Ernie Jackson may not have been big, but he was solid and - my goodness - he was quick. I played on an IM bball team with him and I have never seen anyone move like that.
He was also an extremely nice guy.

he was a first rate defensive back (played in the NFL) and when some running backs got hurt at Duke he played both ways and exceedingly well.

From GoDuke.com - "He turned in his best game against Navy, when he rushed for 181 yards and one touchdown on just 17 carries. For that effort, Jackson was named the ACC's offensive back of the week, the first and only time in ACC history that a player won offensive and defensive honors in the same season."
Ernie was simply amazing.

Searl played both ways as well. He was a warrior who held the ACC intersection record for a long time. Unfortunately his QB skills did not translate to major college football.
