Well most on the Notre Dame boards wish he had stayed at Duke. From what I read I was a fan of Riley as a person but from what I saw his passing was just not good enough to be a considered a top QB.Geez wonder if Riley is starting to regret leaving Duke for Notre Dame?
This is exactly my feeling. He just has no NFL future as a thrower based upon where he is now.Well most on the Notre Dame boards wish he had stayed at Duke. From what I read I was a fan of Riley as a person but from what I saw his passing was just not good enough to be a considered a top QB.
And yeah Riley has no shot at the NFL as of now. Which we knew at Duke. But he does have a lot of Jesus verses in him. Which endows him to the Irish faithful. And could lead to an angels-in-the-outfield type situation on Sundays if he plays for the right team (i.e., the Saints). So actually, maybe he does have a shot at the NFLThis is exactly my feeling. Notre Dame now has to run the table to get in the playoff. I don't see it happening.
USC should be a loss for sure
No. They screwed up the spot first - egregiously badly. It should have been a first down by at least 5 or 6 feet. Then they screwed the clock in ND's benefit. Truly one of the worst things I have seen from sports officiating.Only half watching. Did they completely screw up the clock in ND’s favor on NIU’s last drive? Figures.
I have a difficult time evaluating NFL potential in QBs. Riley has some talent for sure. He has a good arm. He looked almost as banged up against NIU as he did in a Duke uniform. I'm not sure how scouts can determine potential with guys at this level when the people around them are so instrumental. And yeah Riley has no shot at the NFL as of now. Which we knew at Duke. Between that the Iowa ISU game - two amazing finishes.
The biggest indicators of NFL upside at the college level (in no specific order) are (1) arm strength, (2) ability to recognize defensive schemes, (3) downfield passing accuracy, and (4) ability to quickly and effectively go through progressions. There is way more of an ability for mediocre players to get bailed out (or hindered) at the college level due to talent mismatches. This is especially true on teams with great wideouts. But if you watch the ones that are regarded as true NFL talents, they have some combination of those four (often at least two in spades). Riley has flashes of #3 and a decent level of #2, but I’d argue he’s lacking in #4 and not elite in #1. He’s a good dual-threat college QB. But he doesn’t have the ability to pick you apart in the pocket, which is what is required on SundaysI have a difficult time evaluating NFL potential in QBs. Riley has some talent for sure. Is Riley good because he was largely successful with a subpar offensive line at Duke? Is he bad because he isn't good with Notre Dame level talent surrounding him? I have literally no idea. I guess that's why I don't make big bucks as an NFL talent scout
but it's entertaining to watch Maryland slide further into irrelevance.
Hope so! (My son’s there.)USC should be a loss for sure
I have a friend who watches the Giants every week who insists that Jones consistently makes poor reads. The biggest indicators of NFL upside at the college level (in no specific order) are (1) arm strength, (2) ability to recognize defensive schemes, (3) downfield passing accuracy, and (4) ability to quickly and effectively go through progressions. For the record, Daniel was great at #2-4, and solid at #1. And Renfree was great at #1 and #3, but lacking a good amount in #4 and a bit in #2
So you said "no' but you mean "yes, they did screw it up?" I wasn't fully paying attention but it seemed really odd and like ND really benefitted. And since those things always work out for them, in real time I was convinced they would win. So I'm glad they didn't.No. They screwed up the spot first - egregiously badly. Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame, all the fans, and the refs. I don't hate on Notre Dame or Riley Leonard, but it would have been a travesty if they had won that game.
And yes, the NIU coach was perfectly emotional and in the moment. I wanted to tell to the sideline reported to shut up and let him talk.
