NCAA Football 2024 (national discussion)

I just went to a Notre Dame board to see if they were blaming Riley for the loss. He’s getting a lot of hate over there; in fact, the only person getting more hate is Marcus Freeman.
Yeah, the “Riley better not be starting next week” thread is getting lots of comments, and almost none of them are pro-Leonard.

No. They screwed up the spot first - egregiously badly. It should have been a first down by at least 5 or 6 feet. Then they screwed the clock in ND's benefit. Truly one of the worst things I have seen from sports officiating.

Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame, all the fans, and the refs. I don't hate on Notre Dame or Riley Leonard, but it would have been a travesty if they had won that game.

And yes, the NIU coach was perfectly emotional and in the moment. I wanted to tell to the sideline reported to shut up and let him talk.

Between that the Iowa ISU game - two amazing finishes. Very entertaining Saturday with no Blue Devil action.
for sure the spot was criminal, can't believe they did that. But as far as the clock was concerned, (and I'll admit I'm too lazy to go back and look at things) I'm not sure...I did note that as a timeout had been called, the clock kept running for something like 15 seconds when it shouldn't have. That needed to be adjusted, but I don't know if they did that correctly or not.
As far as Riley goes, well, this is what he wanted so very badly, now he can deal with it.
If I were ND fan (I'm thankful I'm not) I'd be concerned about Marcus Freeman more than anyone...they get their pick of a lot of top recruits, and yesterday they got outphysicalled by the Huskies, outgained by 100 yards.

My understanding was the spot was criminal. There was NO timeout, but the clock paused for the (criminal) review. When the confirmed the (criminal) spot, they neglected to restart the clock.

So. Notre Dame got the terrible initial spot, had the indefensible spot confirmed, and then received the benefit of about twenty extra seconds on the clock.

However, the box score shows a Notre Dame timeout at the spot in question and the folks doing commentary were pretty terrible so they may have ignored that it happened.

Fact remains, with or without the time out, the refs did their level best to keep NBC's college football program undefeated.

The only tweak I would make to MtnDevil's post is that the first down wasn't "confirmed." It wasn't overturned by incontrovertible evidence so "the call stands."

I absolutely agree that the ball placement was an abomination.

Was at my son’s house for dinner and started watching the end of the game with the sound off. We both figured that NIU had the first down and he went back to the kitchen. Hen they signaled 4th down we both said wtf. Never turned the sound on until after NIU kicked off. Did the announcers say anything?

They kept saying "ooh it looks like it'll be close" and then "you just can't overturn that because it's so close,"

Which, a) it really wasn't that close at all (looked to me like the NIU player had it by a yard and a half) and b) yes you can.

Looks like all the hype about Deion Sanders amd Colorado has been misplaced. They were completely outmatched by Nebraska yesterday, on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

And for all the talk about his son as a first-pick quarterback, i'm sorry but I just don't see lt. He had a LOT of passes batted down. He's good, but not as good as people have been saying he is, in my opinion.

I don't think anyone was really suggesting that Sanders/Colorado were more than a flash in the pan.

They were a fun feel good story for a few weeks last season, then they were exposed. The story has run its course - I didn't get the sense that anyone was expecting much out of Colorado this year.

Looks like most had their number of wins at 5.5 - that feels about right.

I think they, for a short period of time, supported the belief you could completely rebuild your team from the portal....evident now you can accomplish a lot, but you can't replace everyone.

seems high. i'd put it at 2.5. they barely beat NDSU last week....seem worse than last year, when they only barely eeked out a couple of their 4 wins, including over CSU.

Please forward your note above to the braintrust at the World Wide Leader. They must have money on the line given their continued slobbering over Deon and the Buffs.
