NCAA Football 2024 (national discussion)

Ted Roof was the DC at Oklahoma the past few years. He just got fired a few months into his job as DC at UCF. He was working under Guz Malzahn, with whom he had worked at Auburn. Other than being DC at GA Tech from 2013-2017, he has moved around a lot since he left Duke. I know that is somewhat typically for college assistants, but he seems pretty extreme. Amazing that he is still only 60 years old - seems like he has been around forever.

High risk high reward career. His two year contract was for $1.1 million including $700k next year....and that's a bit pedestrian for P4 coordinator positions these days.

Per wiki, UCF was his EIGHTEENTH college coaching stop. The majority of them have been for one year, then move on. His wife must be some kinda committed to the man.
she might get a nice vacation next year as his 2025 salary was supposed to be for $700k....

We know all about Elmo’s loyalty. His denial doesn’t ring true in any way.
Sure sure. He builds a "program."

I'll just leave this quote here, emphasis mine.

"He worked tirelessly in his two seasons to truly elevate our Duke football program, so we are really appreciative of Mike and the work that he did here," said Duke Athletics Director Nina King

Midnight Mike is coming under fire for what seems a classless attack on Jimbo Fisher. He denies he was referring to his old boss. But then, who was he referring to?
I can get that it maybe wasn’t directed at Fisher or anyone, but then what was his point?
I think he meant Jimbo for sure. I guess it could somehow have been directed at Brian Kelly, whose team the Aggies had just beaten and who doesn't necessarily talk fast, but is definitely a little slick. Remember the terrible "Southern" accent he suddenly developed on the drive from South Bend to Baton Rouge?

Carly Simon, Alanis Morissette, Mike Elko. Who were they talking about? We'll never know.

Actually, Pete Thamel says in this College GameDay Podcast (video) that this wasn't about former TAMU coach Jimbo Fisher, or LSU coach Brian Kelly, or Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, but about recruiting the 3 visiting players who soon committed to the Aggies. The segment starts around the 24-minute mark:

There's also a brief bit at the end about SMU-Duke, an "awful and great game" (42:30 mark). Rece Davis said the following:

"Duke had a chance with a short field goal to win the game, and a man called Jahfari Harvey from SMU basically did a standing broad jump high jump over the Duke offensive line and blocked what would have been the game-winning field goal. No foul because he was in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage, and I was reliably told by the head of officials that when they wrote the rule, they never anticipated having a defensive lineman that could basically stand and explode into the air over the line, land, and block it. It was a remarkably athletic play..."

Is it still controversial to think that “Every game counts” is infinitely more true in the large playoff era?

I just watched the end of the Texas Tech / Iowa State game. In this era, that game absolutely counts in the National Championship race. Before, well, the names of those teams speak for themselves.

The winners of the Big4 conference championships are automatically the top 4 seeds in the Championship Series and have home field in the first round.

^ for now. I think there will be a lot of kicking and screaming from the #5 and #6 seeds having better teams but playing an extra game in December. Then again, it might work in their favor like the staggered ACC tournament often has for the non-bye seed. Also cue the conspiracy about the refs not wanting to call a game in Ames snowdrifts in early January.

Well of course the game “counts,” but does the fact that Penn State lost a close one —its first loss of the season — to Ohio State today really matter that much? Barring a collapse, Penn State is going to be in the playoff anyway.

Midnight Mike & Co are trailing our older son's alma mater in the 3rd quarter 30-20. Lots o' time left but go Gamecocks!

UGA looked like trash for most of the game. Better put, QB Beck looked like trash for much of the game. The defense that absolutely dominated Texas looked like it was sleepwalking vs. Florida.

I’m watching this game ONLY to cheer against Midnight Mike. This might be the only game that goes the way I want it to this entire weekend. Go Gamecocks!
Oh dang. It’s only the end of the 3rd quarter. I thought it was 4th. Been a long tough weekend for me. Hoping SC can hold on.
