MBB: The 2025 Transfer Portal

It doesn’t mean it is likely those guys stay. Last year on this date, none of the guys who actually played had announced entry into the portal. And that was despite the season ending a week earlier last year. But then on April 16, 18, and 19 we saw three presumed regulars-to-be announce their plans to leave.

Now, I certainly hope several guys stay. But I don’t think the lack of announcements yet has any bearing on the likelihood of guys staying.

My bad: one regular (Mitchell) had announced a portal entry on April 9. So if we don’t hear anything by April 16, then maybe we feel good that we will retain one more guy than we did last year.

Jon's public statements, no quick departure like Mitchell, the absence of a 5th year class. I think all these things point to higher retention, more continuity than last year. But we won't know until we know.

Again though, as of this date relative to the end of season last year, there had been no significant departures yet. April 16 would be the equivalent to when Mitchell announced he was leaving.

I do hope we have more retention, and am on record as saying we should have at least one more guy return than the two we had last year. But I don’t think we have any reason yet to expect a mass return.

Hopefully we have a good group returning and Scheyer is able to bring in whatever augmentations he wants/needs as well. But I think we are in the “no news is no news” stage for the next 8 days. Not the “no news suggests good news” stage.

I've seen a lot of confusion over the timeline for some of these things, so to clarify everything that pertains to Duke/NCAA:

-Deadline for a player to enter the transfer portal: April 22nd
-Deadline to declare for NBA Draft: April 26th
-NBA Draft Lottery: May 12th
-Deadline to withdraw from NBA Draft to maintain college eligibility: May 28th
-Deadline to choose new team in transfer portal: NO DEADLINE

And for people impatient about us not having any links to current portal players, here's how the timeline went for who we ended up getting:
Maliq Brown: entered portal on 4/2, committed 4/20
Mason Gillis: entered portal on 4/10, committed 4/22
Sion James: entered portal on 4/30, committed 5/10
Cam Sheffield: entered portal on 3/20, committed 5/16

We still got time. No news doesn't mean anything but no public news.
The issue as far as possible incoming transfers is: how many guys who are good enough and good enough fits that we'd be interested still waiting to enter the portal? Are there that many high quality transfers yet to enter, with only a week to go before the deadline?

April 16 was 14 days before the portal closed. It's now 8 days until the portal closes. :) You can go half-empty if you want. I'm going half-full - mostly based on Jon's public statements. We aren't that far apart if you're guessing 3/6 return. I'm guessing 4/6.

If you are thinking 4-6, then yes we aren’t far apart. I am setting my expectations for 3-6 with anything more being gravy but not impossible.

And I am not being glass-half-empty. I am being agnostic towards the glass!

Here are the ins and outs of the ACC so far. If anyone copies this list to another website (hint hint, Syracusefan.com board), please provide credit and a link to DBR.

I would bet every single last cent I have. EVERY SINGLE cent. That he is gone.
I suspect that the way things ended doesn't sit well with him being the competitor that he is, making him inclined to run it back. I think it all depends on if Kon wants to join him. If not, Coop goes pro. My guess is Maluach is going pro so he doesn't have to worry about visa issues as a student (i.e., NBA will pull strings for him).
