Hurricane Helene

JD retweeting a meme that says "your government hates you" and somehow tries to compare Ukraine aid with the lie that hurricane victims are "only getting $750" is disgusting. I say this as a Duke alumnus with friends in Asheville and as a former Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine with many, many Ukrainian friends who have been displaced from their homes for 2 1/2 years and had loved ones killed by Russian genocide. Not that each tragedy is comparable, but since JD apparently thinks they are, maybe he can come on here and explain to us how hurricanes are bombing maternity hospitals, raping and decapitating civilians, and abducting and brainwashing tens of thousands of children.

I can't even begin to address the absolute braindead absurdity and willful ignorance someone would have to have to post such nonsense...right among Duke bball hype tweets, from the handle "@DBRTweetz" and with the DBR logo as the profile pic.

I'm not an active poster but I have been a visitor of this community since 2008. This is just absurd and JD needs to get his "stuff" together and apologize to everyone in this community for spreading utter nonsense with a not-subtle splash of Russian propaganda that is tremendously harmful - and doing so in a way that's affiliated with this community.
Well, if my math is right, that's about $40 each to the 38M Ukrainians. And that's over 6M fewer Ukrainians than were before Putin's war. So I guess it's a bargain?

But as it says in the tweet, America First. To hell with allies. And any understanding of the world we live in.

I’m 100% on your side on this issue but you made a significant decimal error. We have given approximately $150 billion to Ukraine and their population is around 38 million. If my math is right that comes to approximately $4000 per capita.

The post with imbedded tweet (that I responded to) specifically said 1.5B to Ukraine. Of course they've gotten more than that over the course of the war. The original tweet comparison JD amplified was for what is happening in the moment.

Ah, got it. In any case the tweet was bs propaganda.

Debating the finer points of a strawman argument only lends it credence, in my opinion. If anyone can draw a straight line from Ukraine support to any shortage of recover and relief in WNC, please forward it to my inbox. Otherwise, the decimal point is irrelevant.

Sorry, I'm getting a little salty at this - especially regarding the lack of any response, explanation, etc.

Exactly. Does anyone know if JD is an alum or just a fan? Because I'd hope for better critical thinking by a website so heavily associated (though not officially) with Duke.
Unfortunately being a Duke (or Harvard or Princeton, etc.) grad doesn’t preclude becoming a propaganda shill for the MAGA cult. Too many leaders of the fairytale-spinning MAGA/FOX power centers are graduates of our best schools. Boggles the mind.

JD is not a Duke alumnus himself, but has major family connection to the university.

"King, though not an alumnus himself, is the son of two alumni and the grandson of the late Deryl Hart, the former Duke president and chair of the department of surgery. "

I don't think it matters. JD King's bon fides as a Duke fan, supporter and advocate are well established. This place has always been a fans joint...the local (yet worldwide) bar. Although we don't all agree on everything, we all try to lookout for one another even the (figuratively) guys that have had one too many. We all have lives outside of this board and don't know that's going on in those lives. Right now is a very rough time for our posters, our families, our friends even our foes. It's not easy and people deal with it in different ways. We are all still Duke.....well except /Wheat:) (hope you are OK) and sometimes Packman.

Sorry. Not meant to slander the fandom. Meant to slam any graduate of Duke who believes this s*** and especially those who propagate it.
Honestly, I don't care what he believes. I don't agree and I find it hurtful, but his beliefs are his. I just think he ought to understand how it feels from this perspective, and also I don't like it associated with this community.

If everyone in this community agreed with those ideas - sure, go for it. But I'd probably find some place else to spend my valuable Internet time.
