Hurricane Helene

If you know anyone in Georgia and especially Atlanta, call them and tell them to prepare. The folks in Atlanta have no idea what is coming their way. This is VERY similar to Hugo in 1989 where the storm was a strong Tropical Storm when it got to Charlotte and they were hit really hard. Same thing with Fran in Raleigh in 1996.

Storms don't normally carry that much windspeed that far inland. The trees aren't these prepared for sustained winds. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Atlanta was shutdown for a week+.

The folks along the coast know the deal and their frequent storms. Ditto for the folks in the mountains. They understand the risk of that rain and the danger of landslides. My fear is that Atlanta will be completely unprepared for this magnitude of storm.

Prayers to all in the path.

Ah, Fran. I remember getting kicked off the quad during that storm by campus police. Not because the storm was dangerous in their estimation, but because we were playing football and were damaging the grass.

Hugo was definitely not a fun ordeal.

Yes it's going to be like Hugo, especially for the south half of metro Atlanta. Charleston got all the TV coverage in Hugo, but most of Charlotte was without power for a week or more. I bought the last generator in Gwinnett county and drove it to Charlotte for my parents. HD had already shipped all of theirs to Charleston. Nobody expected Charlotte to get hit.

Opal brushed Atlanta in 1995, but this is going to be more of a direct hit.

Georgia and Western Carolina are also getting set up with an incredible amount of rain from a strong front out ahead of the storm. We’ve gotten 4-5 inches where I am so far today and the outer storm bands are still hours away.

This may get messy when limbs start coming down all across the area.

I probably stumbled past you on the way back to my dorm (I think I had a few beverages that night). Might have intercepted you. Since we are the same person.

Rain in advance is super bad, especially if you have a lot of big hardwoods. Those old oak trees have really shallow root systems and if the ground gets water logged enough, a decent wind will just tip them over, root ball and all.

I was at WFU during Hugo, and even we got nailed pretty hard. A HUGE tree fell across the main entrance of campus and classes were cancelled b/c so many professors weren't able to get there b/c of trees down where they lived.

And, yes, the Triangle got hit by Fran hard as it was still a hurricane when it reached us. Also, it had rained for several days beforehand, unconnected to Fran, and when the winds hit, the oaks were just plucked from the ground. SO many trees down.
