FB (Gator Bowl): Ole Miss 52, Duke 20

Assuming Mensah isn't playing for us in the bowl, if I were Belin, I would be asking for a big retention bonus right around now. Because I think there is a huge delta between him and the next option, and we don't want to humiliate ourselves. It is sad that this is how things work now, but it is what it is.

Belin should not have to ask for anything. Instead, Duke should take the initiative to reflect on the young man's loyalty and make sure that he is being properly and fairly treated under the circumstances.

I have ESPN on and they are previewing all of the bowl games. Both analysts picked Ole Miss. They talked about Murphy being gone so Loftis is starting. I guess they didn't get the memo about Loftis. Serves me right for watching the dumb show (admittedly while doing several other things).

So right now coaches are preparing their teams for bowl games, while managing the chaos of the transfer portal. It can't be easy.

I've yet to read that Grayson won't be at the game. In an interview (from today I think) Manny said we'd have both Beilin and Loftis. I'm hopeful, but even if we only have Henry I have faith in his abilities.

Thinking that Loftiss status has nothing to do with them picking Ole Miss. Ole Miss has clearly played at a much higher level all year than Duke has. Now, the two teams that play in the game won't resemble either team from the regular season - which is a challenge for non playoff bowls even continuing to exist - but that's another topic.

The fact is by all objective measures, this game will be viewed as more one sided than the 2013 game versus Texas A and M. And that's fair. What's also fair is that upsets can and do happen, or almost happen, even in games that are lopsided on paper. The 2013 game was very close and exciting of course.

Being reported that Duke offered Loftis $40,000 to $50,000 to play in the Bator Bowl behind Belin. He has supposedly declined. Chandler Rivers father who supposedly posts on the Devils Den says with Belin playing Duke will beat Ole Miss. I like his enthusiasm.

So only Jordan Moore is the backup QB?

From https://dukewire.usatoday.com/2024/...-wide-receiver-quarterback-changed-positions/

****************
Moore committed to the Blue Devils as a top-50 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2021 but changed positions ahead of his sophomore season.
****************

****************
Moore started the 2021 season as one of six quarterbacks on the Duke roster. Despite the depth at the position and his status as a freshman, he still found the ball in his hands routinely. He ran the ball 44 times for 221 yards and completed nine of his 19 attempts for 95 yards. He scored four touchdowns, three with his legs and one with his arm.
****************

I also like Rivers' father's enthusiasm. GO DUKE!!!

I've already emailed Manny that I will suit up as back-up QB for $30,000; I mean, I played QB on my 7th grade flag football team.

I like the positivity of thinking that Duke will beat Ole Miss BUT I would NOT bet my life savings on that prediction.

In light of how important money has become to the college game, I think Duke should publish the roster of who will participate at each position before families spend a lot of money for the trip. I say that as a person who traveled with family to Birmingham last year. Should we contact the FB office and ask this question?

Well assuming for a second that the above is correct.....I draw a couple conclusions:
A: Duke was a tad panicked about maybe having ZERO QBs for the game........
B: Chandler Rivers, and hence his dad, think Belin is better than Murphy.........and
C: if B is true, they are not alone.

I will say the couple of plays Belin had at NW - the offense showed juice and enthusiasm that MM had not been able to generate to that point. Then MM came back in, and while Duke won, would not say it was a very good offensive game for Duke.....

I'll add that I like Loftis, that he played a wonderful game against the Cheats, and without the help of the Zebras, he outplayed all Solar System what's his name unibrow bros.........

I wouldn't say Belin is better than Maalik but there is a very good case that he is a better option at QB for this particular opponent. He's more mobile, not afraid to get hit and gets the ball out more quickly.

Well a couple of things....I'm not sure I think Belin is better either, but I think it's an open question. To that point....I kinda read into it that maybe Rivers and some of the players think Belin may be better....if you got to the truth. Again, that's just a gut hunch based on how River's dad comments struck me. This would not be unusual...I think few lockerrooms are 100% in agreement on starting QBs...doesn't mean they don't bust their tail for the starter chosen by the coach, but 80 players are rarely 100% in sync on any issue.

All fair points. At a minimum, I think Belin should have seen more reps than he did during the season, whether as a regular change of pace option or when Maalik was really struggling (e.g. against FSU). That he didn't is frankly a bit puzzling to me.

Didn’t he still have some injury issues?

Yes. Please get one from Ole Miss as well and post. Thx!

Not that I'm aware of but others can correct me. I went to 4 of 6 home games and can recall him dressed and tossing passes in all of them.
he has had an ongoing shoulder "situation" but trying to get health updates from college staffs these days is basically impossible.

Is this a joke? I mean, a lot has changed since NIL, so I may be in the dark ages ... but if this isn't a joke, it's baffling to me. What would stop any key player from holding out for some extra sweet moolah at the last minute? Is there a contract? Enforceable?

Just today I read of an NFL player who was needed to go into the SF-LAR game last night, who just walked away from taking the call, even though he had suited up for the game.
