FB (Gator Bowl): Ole Miss 52, Duke 20

Kiffin might laugh at our defense but I thought our guys hit hard and the ole Miss guys know they were in a fight. Our guys should be nothing but proud of their effort in this game and the entire season. Well done!!
Dart saw the dirt plenty

I dunno, I’m not saying we would have won but having Malik and a few others bail / out had to hurt.
Respectfully, not much, if at all.
Henry was good at rolling out, at extending plays with his feet. I felt Maalik would have been smoked sitting in a tight pocket.
Jim Brown wouldn’t have been successful with their run defense. Star was a great kid, but he was no Jim Brown.

yeah, I think Sagarin was probably right rating Zippi as the 8th best team in the country...

Definitely don’t think we’d have won but there’s something to be said for continuity and better talent. How much? Who knows but it was a bummer we didn’t get to at least see.

Even just having a few more sustained drives to give our D some rest.

Brewer was given a 1 year title promotion before he left SMU; Casey Woods was the SMU OC before, during and after Brewer. Woods is the son of Sparky Woods.
He received the title promotion to co-OC in February 2023. Lashlee has included Brewer on his offensive staffs in numerous locations because he knows the guy is a bright young offensive coach. As QB coach, he was a key factor behind the design of SMU's potent passing attack in 2022, which is why he was given the promotion to co-OC in early 2023. That 2023 offense was tough to stop. He joined Manny's staff in December 2023, after that 2023 SMU season... Am I missing something?

I haven’t looked it up but I think this is accurate.

SMU folks were generally sorry to see him go, but happy for him to have a promotion opportunity.

Not sure it has been mentioned here, but I was at the game and the biggest surprise of the night to me was that we had more fans in attendance than Ole Miss. Interest in the program has definitely grown over the last three years.
It definitely seemed that there were far more empty seats across the field in the ole Miss section…I was proud of the Duke turnout. But I assumed it was because the OM fans felt this bowl assignment was such an insult.
Also in the pregame videos of the previous gator bowls you could see that most were sellouts…in our game the upper level of the stadium was almost completely empty.

I think we will have a better idea about Brewer next season when we have a mobile QB that can run the offense Brewer wants to run. This year was late-portal patchwork at several key spots.

As Austin notes, the folks at SMU seemed to like him. More importantly to me, Manny believes in him. I look forward to a better year next season on that side of the ball.

Agreed. Our weak run-blocking really limited our offense this year. That said, our pass protection exceeded my expectations given what Brewer started with. I think he did very well with what we had. I expect the offense will be much better next year, but we’ll miss Pancol and Moore. Those guys had terrific seasons, and we would have had a very different season without them.

To my unsophisticated eye, it seemed like Murphy and Brewer were often not on the same page this year. But I never knew who was more at fault. Too many 40 yard pass attempts on 3rd and 1 for my liking.

He was an offensive quality control assistant for Lashlee at Miami. Not an on field staffer. In 2022, when Lashlee took the job at SMU, he named Woods the OC. That year was Brewer’s first year as an on field position coach. He got a promotion in title the following year, but Woods remained OC in 2023 and is still SMUs OC. Brewer is still very green. This was the first year he had true autonomy over an offense.
