FB: Duke 29, N.C. State 19

I think a lot of NCSU's issue is their offensive playcalling and it is just not working with their current personnel. Probably State fans biggest issue with DD, outside of not getting the team to step up for big games like Tennessee or their bowl games, is he will not let his OC cook. Thats what they say about Drink and Beck. Not sure about Anae, but I would be surprised he returns.
I feel bad for Jordan Waters in that he's gotten a lot of grief for State fans over his lack of production. For whatever reason, his style just doesn't work for them. As far as Concepcion goes, I don't know the story there. He was a focal point of their offense last year, and looked super talented. This year, he doesn't seem to be featured at all, I don't know if its a playcalling thing, or he just isn't engaged or what To me, he is exactly the player Murphy needs as a target, a guy who, at least last year, would catch the ball and make a play happen, and free up the other WRs. I'm sure he's probably SEC bound, but since Moore is leaving after this year, Diaz should maybe kick the tires on that idea.
Also, is Jacquez Moore still injured? I wasn't able to watch the game live so I watched a condensed replay. Seems like the only backs to get the ball were Thomas and Jones.
The Concepcion thing is weird. He was great last year. I think he had three drops Saturday...the young QB is a tad twitchy (Duke's defense gets credit) but his receivers did him no favors. As for Waters, if he actually got the million bucks he was said to have received, I guess that soothes the pain.

Basic agreement here. One prediction seems pretty obvious to me: at least one of the three will not be with Duke next year, and I might put a bet on two of them moving on.
Sadly agree. It extra sucks since we saw both of them in action last year and both of them looked more than promising.

unfortunate if it happens, but this is the way of quarterbacks, you want at least four on your roster and several have to sit.

You can never have too many quarterbacks. Someone famous said that but I don’t remember who. Or, perhaps I’m mistaken and they were talking about pitching.

Very true. But the flip side is that with the portal, starter caliber QBs can no longer be expected to wait as long for their turn to play. Not a Duke-specific issue by any means, and a phenomenon that actually seems to be helping CFB parity, at least among the power conferences.

In my last post, I guess I probably should have added that, in this era, the probability of all three QBs moving on is something greater than zero. It is hopefully highly improbable.

I assumed from the time when Murphy's transfer was announced, that he will be at Duke one year, maybe two at the most. If he plays well the rest of this season I could see him moving on just like Riley did.

Maybe, but just like with the NFL, he won't be as attractive without a running game. The TD run was his only one of the year for positive yardage.
His total yardage is 71 in the wrong direction, with an average per game of -4.2.

Just ask Florida fans. After having their starting quarterback sidelined for the season with an injury at #8-ranked Tennessee, the Gators lost their backup quarterback in the second quarter of the game against #2-ranked Georgia in Jacksonville -- while leading, I might add -- and had to cast a walk-on freshman QB into the den of the Dawgs. Then that poor third-string rookie got his first start against #3-ranked Texas in Austin. As usually happens with such misfortunes, it did not end well. (And yes, since you asked, that's a really brutal schedule. When you're confronted with a formidable gauntlet like that, even people who aren't famous would acknowledge that you can never have enough quarterbacks.)

Just ask Duke fans, who saw all three play last year due to injury.

According to the Fettville Observer, his buyout is just shy of $16 million should he be canned this year....just a mere pittance.

FSU wishes that Norvell's buyout was just shy of $16 million—State has an absolute bargain in DD's buyout! Those poor 'Noles will have to pay Norvell $64 million for the honor of rolling the dice again, then pony up another $500+ million for the honor of going 1-9 in the SEC or B1G... (this season is the FSU joke gift that just keeps on givin'!)

What will they pay Deon?

I was at that game and I disagree. The two teams were reasonably close in talent and ability. SMU won the game, has a better record, and would be favored if we played again. But our chance of winning would be way higher than 10%.

They outgained us 469 to 393 in yardage, and 6.3 to 5.1 on a yards per play basis. They moved the ball a bit better than us, but were certainly not dominant in that regard. Teams regularly win games at that kind of a yardage disparity, even without a turnover advantage.
The teams are indeed pretty close. And who’s “better” (scores notwithstanding) is an unsolvable debate anyway. How much did a hugely emotional first-ever win over FSU the week prior take out of Duke? Meanwhile, SMU didn’t even land in Dallas after winning at Stanford until after dawn on Sunday, then had to keep going to the other coast in short order. You can’t objectively unpack all the factors.

I’m sure there are exceptions but I have always got along well with State folks. Mostly good people.
I was at the game with a small group of Duke fans. Received nothing but courteous treatment the whole game. Honestly the best stadium I've ever attended as a fan of the visiting team.

State also did an excellent job of honoring their seniors and veterans. Food was good. Came away very impressed.
