FB: Duke 29, N.C. State 19

Also have to shout out to Taylor who is the one that chased down the State player after Eli fumbled at the end of the 1st half. Giving up a touchdown there would have been devastating. Thanks also to the State player who recovered the fumble for running out of gas. But really Taylor never gave up on the play, something Manny and his coaches have taught these guys.

As Manny said after the game - who would have guessed that our tight end’s best play would be a track-down tackle?

Fair enough, but OTOH we should have defeated SMU and could have defeated GT. We’re a good team that is almost very good.
As much as we could have beaten GT, that game was lost in the first half when our defense spent like 23 minutes on the field. They had nothing left in the 4th.

Let's go! 7 wins with this roster/coaching turnover is seriously impressive.

- I must say I was surprised to see us as a Vegas underdog. State is not a good team. Vegas has seriously underrated us all year.

- We committed a ton of really bad penalties, gave away a terribly untimely turnover that cost us between 6 and 10 points, got zero from the running game, dropped a TD pass, converted zero 3rd downs, and won by 10.

- I'm becoming a believer in Maalik Murphy. He has made some really good throws in the last 3 weeks. When he avoids the risky passes, he's a good passing QB. Give him a half decent OL next year, and he'll put up big numbers. He even had a nice TD run! Even more impressive was his scramble to avoid the rush and find JoMo on that 2nd and 20 pickup.

- #7 for NC State had just 25 yards on 11 carries, and was involved in two of the biggest plays of the game: 1) 3rd down in the red zone, Jalen Stinson made mince meat out of his attempt at pass protection on the way to a big sack. 2) 3rd and 2 with a chance to take the lead in the 3rd quarter, Wesley Williams slams him down behind the line. Turns out that you can't buy our football culture.

- Chandler MF Rivers. Held their star WR to 0 catches. Kid is a star. Our ability to cover 1 on 1 is everything for a defense that loves to blitz.

- What else can even be said about Jordan Moore? He may be the best "difficult catch" receiver we've ever had. Dude simply doesn't even need to be open.

- Seeing so many of our players throw up the wolf ears down brings so much warmth to my heart. I am so glad to have this rivalry back.

- I've been down on our special teams, so I have to give them love today. That first punt helped create the safety which set the tone for the game. Todd had a great comeback performance after what happened against SMU.

GT was a tough matchup for us. They have a lot of quick, shifty skill position guys and did a great job of spreading our defense out and not letting us get our calling card straight ahead pressure going at all.

Strong agreement about Rivers, but let's also be fair and say that there was at least one other factor contributing to that stat, namely a strong case of dropsies.

For sure. State's WRs were bad. Somehow Concepcion has been much less effective this year.

For a team that spent so much in NIL and had a ton of preseason hype, I was really not impressed with their talent level. Their DL played well, but we were better at every single other position battle.

DD's buyout is large, but if he loses to Cheats and doesn't go bowling, he's a marked man. Been there too long to have a losing ACC record.

Pack fans flabbergasted as to how "easily" teams like Duke and Indiana can bring in new talent and thrive.

Don’t disagree that we won some we could have lost, but disagree about SMU. Any team that gives up, what was it 6 turnovers, is not the superior team. They won it because our usually reliable kicker had a bad game.

Manny has this team playing remarkably well. They bring it EVERY week. They may lose, but when in the last 50 years has Duke been in it every game. And a special shoutout to our receivers especially Jordan Moore. He has been exceptional and will play at the next level. I thought last year’s staff might have been the best teaching staff at Duke in forever, but this one is superior. When injuries hit last year we didn’t have folks who could step up. This year we play a lot of guys and the non starters keep stepping up. Can’t remember Duke football ever having any depth.
I have two ride-or-die teams, and they are Duke and SMU (this has mostly sucked every year in every way).

Watching that game was zero fun for me and I was as close to neutral as is possible; Methodist Flats v High on the Hilltop.

It’s not really possible to say who was the better team that evening. Are six turnovers worse than zero points off those six turnovers? And Pelino wasn’t perfect that game but the end-of-game issue (for Duke) was a stunningly athletic leap-over. That’s an SMU +, not a Duke/Pelino -.

I’m mostly just glad it’s over.

As reported on the game links page, Maalik Murphy is three TD passes away from becoming the all-time single-season leader at Duke. Anthony Dilweg set the mark of 24 in 1988.

Dilweg's record-setting mark of 3,824 yards, also in '88, is safe barring three straight games of 500 yards passing by Maalik! Eek!

I guess we'll have to wait and see if Maalik's newfound lust for rushing glory affects the chase.:)

Anyone have any insight as to why, in the TENTH game of the season we:

1) Put Loftis in (and, I assume, burned his redshirt) for exactly 1 play from scrimmage?

AND

2) Used Murphy as a runner all of a sudden?

I feel like we might be 8-2 instead of 7-3 if we'd used those weapons before the State game.

1) Loftis can do that in three more games and retain his redshirt.
