The turnovers don't point to SMU's weakness, though—they point to Duke's defensive strength. And while I agree that turnover margin fluctuates from year to year, defensive philosophies that are designed to wreak havoc (produce turnovers and TFLs) generally tend to consistently do so. Manny's defenses over the years consistently force a lot of turnovers and are consistently among the best in the nation at doing so, whether at Middle Tennessee St, Texas, Mississippi St, Miami, Penn State, or Duke (they also excel at generating TFLs). So it's not SMU saying, "here, you take it and see what you can do," it's Duke saying, "I'll take that, thank you very much!" The fact that they had trouble producing points is a reflection of both Duke's offensive issues and the fact that SMU also has a pretty solid defense (one that was able to exploit those offensive issues). The game was close because both teams are very good.
