FB: Duke 29, N.C. State 19

Don’t disagree that we won some we could have lost, but disagree about SMU. Any team that gives up, what was it 6 turnovers, is not the superior team. They won it because our usually reliable kicker had a bad game.

Manny has this team playing remarkably well. They bring it EVERY week. They may lose, but when in the last 50 years has Duke been in it every game. And a special shoutout to our receivers especially Jordan Moore. He has been exceptional and will play at the next level. I thought last year’s staff might have been the best teaching staff at Duke in forever, but this one is superior. When injuries hit last year we didn’t have folks who could step up. This year we play a lot of guys and the non starters keep stepping up. Can’t remember Duke football ever having any depth.
Sorry but SMU is WAAAAAY BETTTTER than Duke. Not in the same universe. There was a good article that at -3 turnover ratio ( not three turnovers, rather a -3 turnover RATIO) the team gaining the 3 turnovers wins 94% of the time. At PLUS 5 turnovers the team gaining the 5 turnovers wins 98% of the time. It didn’t even go to PLUS 6 turnovers as that’s unheard of. If we can’t win at +6 turnover Ratio we aren’t in the same league.

Play SMU 10 times they win 9. That’s why they are the ONLY undefeated ACC team. Case closed. Give em a few years I bet they are a consistent power. Pony EXCESS and all that. NIL - now it’s legal

Well, I'm not good about making predictions, especially about the future. But SMU had a modest lead in total yards that game, and Duke had a modest lead in TOP. We missed a gimme field goal to win the game, and they committed 6 turnovers. You can make a case for even-steven I suppose, but SMU was not the better team that day.

Six times in a game I have possession of the ball but I say “Here, you take it. See what you can do” and I still outscore you. I'm not the better team?

I get your argument that the turnovers themselves mean SMU is weak but I don't think that argument holds. Turnovers are one of the least stable metrics in football. A good team can be +8 one season and -7 the next. Happens all the time.

Yep. The guys who strip the ball deserve much of the credit.

The scoreboard don't lie. SMU was slightly better than Duke the day they played.

I listened to a NC State podcast last night. They felt strongly that NC State is a better team than Duke. Guess what--scoreboard don't lie.

DD's buyout is large, but if he loses to Cheats and doesn't go bowling, he's a marked man. Been there too long to have a losing ACC record.

Pack fans flabbergasted as to how "easily" teams like Duke and Indiana can bring in new talent and thrive.
According to the Fettville Observer, his buyout is just shy of $16 million should he be canned this year....just a mere pittance.

ya, their board ain't got no respect for us either. Kind of like Northwestern...(I like going there, nice place, good fans)...they denigrate us every year and we've beat them quite a few in a row. (I remember when our fans annually counted Wake as a win when we rarely beat them, such is fandom)

For sure. State's WRs were bad. Somehow Concepcion has been much less effective this year.

For a team that spent so much in NIL and had a ton of preseason hype, I was really not impressed with their talent level. Their DL played well, but we were better at every single other position battle.
I think a lot of NCSU's issue is their offensive playcalling and it is just not working with their current personnel. Probably State fans biggest issue with DD, outside of not getting the team to step up for big games like Tennessee or their bowl games, is he will not let his OC cook. Thats what they say about Drink and Beck. Not sure about Anae, but I would be surprised he returns.
I feel bad for Jordan Waters in that he's gotten a lot of grief for State fans over his lack of production. For whatever reason, his style just doesn't work for them. As far as Concepcion goes, I don't know the story there. He was a focal point of their offense last year, and looked super talented. This year, he doesn't seem to be featured at all, I don't know if its a playcalling thing, or he just isn't engaged or what To me, he is exactly the player Murphy needs as a target, a guy who, at least last year, would catch the ball and make a play happen, and free up the other WRs. I'm sure he's probably SEC bound, but since Moore is leaving after this year, Diaz should maybe kick the tires on that idea.
Also, is Jacquez Moore still injured? I wasn't able to watch the game live so I watched a condensed replay. Seems like the only backs to get the ball were Thomas and Jones.

Bailey was 19/36 with a TD and INT, such are the fortunes of Freshmen QBs. Yes his receivers were unreliable but he has to accept some of the blame for being off-target. On the INT the ball was thrown behind his receiver. Still should have been a completion not an interception but that's what you have to deal with as the OC. Blaming the OC is easy but you have to consider the personnel and the take home message for Waters is "don't join a team that is breaking in a new QB who is going to get most of the attention." Go Duke, Go State, please beat the phlegm out of the Cheats."

I was at that game and I disagree. The two teams were reasonably close in talent and ability. SMU won the game, has a better record, and would be favored if we played again. But our chance of winning would be way higher than 10%.

They outgained us 469 to 393 in yardage, and 6.3 to 5.1 on a yards per play basis. They moved the ball a bit better than us, but were certainly not dominant in that regard. Teams regularly win games at that kind of a yardage disparity, even without a turnover advantage.

I am usually generous to announcers, giving them a pass on bias but levying criticisms of prolixity (Cory Alexander disease)..

That said, I was horrified at the performance of Chris Cotter and Mark Herzlich on Saturday's game. Obnoxious, inaccurate, insulting, homer-istic, whatever.... Duke was denigrated at every opportunity -- losing streak, lost lead over #4 Miami, six TOs but no win against Smoo (who caused those TOs, you bozos?)... They had nothing favorable to say about a surprisingly good Duke football team and season. Duke, in fact, had a better overall record than the Wolfpack. And had excelled in comebacks.

But what's more, they openly rooted for the Wolfpack, encouraging their offense to score and their defense to hold together. They seemed disappointed when Duke made the final FG that put the game out of reach.

yeah, they did little to hide their partisanship...I initially watched the game (as usual) on dvr with no sound, yet another benefit. Watched the replay later, those guys were ridiculous.

In the Manny era at Duke turnovers are a very stable metric. Duke consistently gets a lot of them. Turnovers are a huge emphasis of Manny’s defense. Just watch how #45 for Duke attacks the ball in the hands of the runners. Does anyone expect we will be negative in the turnover margin next year?

don't jinx it! The grid gods are a fickle bunch.

Unfortunately, this seems to apply to penalties, too. Many of them are self induced, like the stupid unsportsmanlike call last week. We gave up 3/4 of a football field due to mental mistakes; if we stop shooting ourselves in the foot so often keeping a lead will become a bit easier.

I hope the 2 week break will give some people time to heal up. Have we seen the LB Morris at all lately? Will Pickett be available against Va Tech?

I assume Belin is still hurting in some fashion? We saw him run once and haven't seen him since. Are they going to redshirt both Belin and Loftis? The whole QB strategy has been baffling to me. Although Murphy has certainly grown as the season has gone on.

I love talking Duke football in November, and not just who the next coach will be!

Basic agreement here. One prediction seems pretty obvious to me: at least one of the three will not be with Duke next year, and I might put a bet on two of them moving on.
