IMO, he was mainly elected because Dems refused to admit eggs are $4/dozen. I had that identical experience on the Investment Thread. I was even accused of manipulating the facts by basically stating “eggs are $4/dozen now, which is 27% more than 2020”.
Eggs are $4/dozen because Joe Biden doesn’t have a magical cure for avian flu. I suspect Donald Trump doesn’t either, but he was successful in blaming Joe Biden for avian flu.

Drinking disinfectant is cure for most things IIRC.

Yeah, I would not bet on Trump being a unifying force. There's nothing in his past that suggests this. In fact just the opposite.

I expect Trump to do illegal things, for there to be massive protests, and for Trump and his loyalists to use those protests as an excuse to burn our democracy to the ground. That is the autocratic playbook.

I truly hope that I'm wrong. But I don't think that I am.
SCOTUS has taken care of the “illegal” technicality for Trump. It’s all legal now.

There is something about the SCOTUS ruling that I’ve always wondered about and never seen addressed:

The ruling says the President is immune for official acts. (Not going to address whether or not this was the correct ruling). My assumption is that the immunity does not extend to others (maybe VP, but not really anyone else). If that’s true, isn’t there still some deterrent to do illegal things in that those that do them for the President are not immune? As an example, there’s a large protest somewhere outside of DC. The pres orders for the National Guard to be sent in and that they violently remove the protestors (who have been peaceful). If they did that, wouldn’t everyone else who executed it have legal jeopardy themselves? I picked somewhere outside of DC so there would potentially be state charges that can’t be pardoned by the President.

I get tired of the complaints whenever democrats might show anger when Trump displays resting visceral anger face every day.
It will never cease to amaze me that one candidate can literally call anyone who opposes him “the enemy within”, and can say that immigrants are bringing in bad genes, and many other examples of hateful rhetoric, but if the other party responds to that with any sort of anger it is a problem.

I sincerely hope the next four years go better than many suggest. But I am awaiting the first piece of evidence that this will be the case. Fingers crossed.

Not addressing any specific post, but there are a number of comments out there about young men and the current culture of overt masculinity. As someone who was raised in the time of Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Sylvester Stallone, late Duke Wayne, etc., I would respectfully suggest that this has always been the cultural nature of young men.

It seems to me that the GOP talks to these folks like they are; some in the Democratic Party talk to or about these guys as if there is something wrong with their inherent nature. And that does not seem to be a winning approach for the Dems. It is hard to win over a voting bloc when their inherent nature is deemed “toxic” either expressly or inherently.

Dudes are dudes. Talk about what they care about if you want their vote. Telling them they need to “improve” is a recipe for disaster.

And again, this is not aimed at any post but rather the general conversation I have seen in some corners of the press.
100% strongly and respectfully disagree.

Young men need to improve. We can disagree over whether it's political suicide to say this out loud, or whether it's something that politics should play a role in, but "boys will be boys" (rough paraphrasing of your "dudes are dudes") has been used for generations to excuse abhorrent behavior.

I don't think it's the role of government to find more appropriate role models for young men, but if someone as a parent finds themselves shrugging and saying "dudes will be dudes," I hope it's something like chasing each other with sticks and pretending they are swords.

Smerconish crushing it right now in his opening commentary. I imagine it will pop up on YouTube later today. A must watch, imo.
Didn’t know it when I first posted about Smerconish‘s opening, but he’s also just had Scott Galloway on. The man flat out nailed a major issue in the election. It’s what has just been discussed, and goes right to Mtn.Devil’s post above this one. And for what it’s worth, he’s not a Republican. But he’s just speaking the truth. Well worth a listen when CNN reruns this episode in the middle of the afternoon later today. Or perhaps that segment will be posted on YouTube.

I will wait and see. What gives me most hope is that Trump has a very poor record of delivering on his campaign promises.
Well it’s only a matter of time before Elon and RFK Jr get Bannoned for getting to much press.

The tariffs are going to be the most immediate and hurtful to people and businesses and I can’t see him pulling back on them especially because it executive privilege. It might not be 60% on China and 20% across the rest of the board but it’s coming. Business are already planning for it by redirecting bonus monies to stockpiling inventory.

The no taxes on overtime and tips would have to pass Congress. I’m sure a GOP house will be looking to cut spending and taxes but not those ones. The bond a market is predictive a painful future.

There are going to be so many things that will change that aren’t going to make the headlines. The devil is in the details.

So can we at least agree that this Trump supporter is garbage? It says something about the current state of the world that he probably made tens of thousands of dollars from this. The incentive/reward structure is perverse.

Don’t forget our no taxes on social security!! I am waiting and won’t vote for him (or whoever it is) next time if I don’t get it!

just my .02 worth......plain and simple......you can dig into the demographics and the ins and outs of the campaign strategies, but the fact is:

women are 0-2 in the natty........and that's how it's gonna be for long past our lifetime....

I think a broad-based package of tariffs is unlikely. I predict Trump will place an import tax on a few selected products so he can boast about how tough he’s being on China. Anything more pervasive will have a boomerang effect and punish the American consumer. High prices and inflation helped him get elected and Americans are particularly sensitive to pocketbook issues at the moment when before COVID they weren’t.

But China pays for them!:)
US Businesses and other countries aren't taking your optimistic view. The EU already has a list of retaliating tariffs on American goods. The UK is probably working on one but will be tight lipped because they are also still working on a post-Brexit trade deal. That means the return of the 25% tariff on my Scotch (which Biden ended) among other goods. India isn't going to care too much because they already have tariffs on imports and whatever tariffs do come down will be less than those on China making their products more competitive. If there is going to be a "winner" it's them and Vietnam. Most other Asian countries aren't going to care because they aren't importing many US goods to start off with. Steven Madden has been shifting production out of China for months in anticipation of a Trump win but they aren't moving it to the USA and that was the promise Trump made. They are moving it to other Asian countries with lower labour costs than China which lets them absorb more of the hit (or increases profits if they pass along the tariff). If this tariff come full boar we are looking at a global economy slowdown with several historical case studies. Combined with reduced government spending and GDP = C + I + G + (X-M) isn't looking good in theory.

I'm avoiding the news, watching Comedy Central instead, probably will be for foreseeable future. Desi Lydic noted that the U.S. elected a felon for President before it elected a woman.

I'm wondering if any of our allies are going to be sharing their best intelligence with us anymore. Certainly nothing that could get their agents exposed. Because sharing with Russia or North Korea would be an official act, y'know.

I attended an event last night and struck up a conversation with a cardiologist. He’s from Texas and his parents immigrated from Peru. His wife’s parents immigrated from Sicily. This couple lives in NM now. When learning that I am a wealth management advisor that specializes in clients with complex estate planning issues he asked what I thought about the markets and the election. I told him that my biggest fear is that tariffs and mass deportation are quite inflationary and that extending and even increasing tax cuts would adversely affect the debt which would increase bond yields which would also be inflationary. He dismissed that argument by saying that Trump would never fully implement tariffs or deportation on a large scale (at least not quickly). He then went into something that I thought was really interesting. He informed me that the southern border counties that were blue during Obama went bright red under Trump despite these counties having a majority Hispanic population. His explanation was that they are living the border crisis, others are not. “It’s easy to be welcoming when it’s not your neighborhood that is being pushed to the limits of its resources” he said. He also talked about public schools being overrun with students and lower skilled jobs being unattainable by locals because they are being filled by day laborers. These are real issues that these people are facing and they are being dismissed by people hundreds of miles away as racist and xenophobic. “These Hispanic people didn’t turn racist over the last 8 years, they’ve been pushed into a difficult reality and need help and the Dems aren’t listening” he proclaimed.

I thought it was an interesting take and helped me to better understand how or why some people flipped.

I’m not sure any Democratic politician has dismissed the border issues or suggested racism / xenophobia for the border issues, specifically. Maybe I’m wrong. I think HOW trump talks about them is racist, not THAT it is an important issue.

Biden had a good immigration bill, that contains Ed a lot republicans want to see happen but Trump asked his faithful to yank it so he could run on the issue. He politicized what could have helped.

I do agree with your general point about relative importance of issues. Immigration is not in my top 10, and that’s okay, and I understand why it might be more important to others. That’s okay.

Our country's track record is not that great. We elected a felon (Trump) and a draft dodger (Clinton).
