2024 FB Bowl Watch

ESPN's latest guesses.

Duke's Mayo Bowl (Fri Jan 3rd)
Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, North Carolina)
7:30 p.m., ESPN

Bonagura: Duke vs. Rutgers

Go Bowling Military Bowl (Sat Dec 28th)
Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (Annapolis, Maryland)
5:45 p.m., ESPN

Schlabach: Duke vs. Navy

That Military Bowl would be a fun one for Bob, he can't lose!
A couple of my curling teammates are current Navy students. This could be fun.

Agreed as to GT and Clemson, but not sure why we are 8 or 9 instead of 7. And is it possible for Duke to request a different time for its basketball game? Sure, it's possible. But will Duke or anyone else let that game time influence Duke's bowl game. Not a chance in Carolina hell.
It's the wild, wild west unless the ACC steps in to overrule ESPN. 5-3 ACC wasn't enough for Duke to get a P5 opponent in 2022, and that team was more TV-friendly than this one. Don't get upset if/when UNC gets a "better" bowl either. They will go either 4-4 or 5-3 like Duke. Merit doesn't sell ad time or hotel rooms, but there is a narrative to keep them from losing in Charlotte 2 years in a row.

Sure, money has influenced bowl invitations for a long time. Our failure to travel well for our football team hurts us. But I don't see a basketball time conflict being an influencing factor.

The Athletic [paywall link] has Duke in the Pinstripe Bowl against Michigan. (!!) Pinstripe Bowl is meh but I would love to play Michigan -- they are very ordinary this year.
That I could get excited about! Chance to play against a wounded current champion would be a nice resume boost if we could get the Big W.

What is our recent bowl record against power conference teams?

I can think of only two, and we split. We lost to Arizona State (Sun Bowl) and we beat Indiana. (In the Pinstripe Bowl)

Oh wait, derp. We also lost to A&M. Perhaps I chose to forget that on purpose.

Just to get this back to the top.....

There are 134 FBS teams. Six wins are needed to be bowl eligible and there are 82 bowl spots including the 12 teams in the CFP. Right now there are 64 teams with 6 wins so 18 spots to fill. There are 30 teams with 7 or more losses and thus out of the running.

That leaves 40 teams still in the running for the 18 spots with 24 with 5 wins and 16 with 4 wins.

Those still in the running are as follows:

South Florida Bulls55
UTSA Roadrunners55
North Texas Mean Green55
Virginia Cavaliers55
Virginia Tech Hokies55
Boston College Eagles55
NC State Wolfpack55
California Golden Bears55
West Virginia Mountaineers55
Cincinnati Bearcats55
Wisconsin Badgers55
Michigan Wolverines55
USC Trojans55
Nebraska Cornhuskers55
Western Michigan Broncos55
Eastern Michigan Eagles55
Fresno State Bulldogs55
Arkansas Razorbacks55
Florida Gators55
Oklahoma Sooners55
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers55
South Alabama Jaguars55
UL Monroe Warhawks55
New Mexico Lobos56
App State Mountaineers45
Wake Forest Demon Deacons46
Kansas Jayhawks46
Houston Cougars46
UCF Knights46
Arizona Wildcats46
Utah Utes46
UCLA Bruins46
Michigan State Spartans46
Northwestern Wildcats46
Maryland Terrapins46
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs46
Oregon State Beavers46
Auburn Tigers46
Kentucky Wildcats46
Old Dominion Monarchs46

Some of the “names” on that list I’d love to see Duke play
Michigan State
Michigan
Oklahoma
Florida
Auburn
UCLA
Arkansas
USC
2nd options:
Oregon State
Wisconsin
Nebraska
Beating any of those teams would be signature wins 30 years ago, but probably not useful on the recruiting trail today.

I had this nightmare last night: we win our last two games and get matched in a bowl game with Texas A&M. Please tell me it cannot happen.
Even if we win our last 2, I doubt we get slotted into a bowl of the caliber that A&M will be in.

Michigan would be good. I'd like a B1G opponent because I think much of that league is overrated and we can grab a nice win. SEC is, as OPK indicates, much more daunting.

Pretty sure Johnny Manziel is out of eligibility.

I guess it would be awkward to see a familiar face in charge on the opposite sideline. As in Trooper Taylor, the interim head coach of the Aggies after Mike Elko pulls a reverse Jimbo Fisher and takes the FSU job.

I’m worried we play South Carolina or Vandy.

I don’t see a Duke-Vanderbilt matchup unless it’s the bowl game in Charlotte. Two (comparatively) small fan bases that don’t travel well.

Yea, I'm with you here, Bud. This may be one of the few years when Duke could actually beat Michigan.

Charlotte is ACC-B10 this year. You can get MI or USC there. The only ACC-SEC bowl is Jacksonville, and they will take something like GT-SC over either Duke or Vandy.
