2024-25 Announcer Thread

We are probably doomed to more endless Corey Alexander ego stories Monday night as we blow out his alma mater. If the game is at least somewhat competitive we may be spared. I’ll give Dick Vitale a pass under the circumstances, excepting his encouragement of Alexander. I presume he was unaware of how we’ve suffered under the barrage of endless blather.

I would assume that Dickie V watched most, if not all, Duke games on TV... so had plenty of "experience" listening to CA.
 
I mute ALL sporting events. Don’t need someone telling me what I’m seeing. I’ve got eyes and a brain.

It's pretty funny that even the highlight video that @brevity posted in the game thread is just overwhelmed by the constant babble. I really don't need to hear that to enjoy highlights!

I think he said Dawn Staley - the best coach in women’s college basketball - is also his “lil sis.” Pretty offensive really.

Especially since Dawn Staley is older than him. Though in that case, they overlapped at UVA many years ago so there might actually be a legitimate long-standing friendship.

Maybe. Still, her accomplishments in basketball dwarf his. She’s one of the most impressive women in the history of basketball. While he may intend it as a term of endearment, it still sounds minimizing to me.

If you have a lifelong relationship with someone you can refer to them as "little sis" or "little bro" regardless of their professional accomplishments - that really has nothing to do with it. The nature of a longstanding relationship should not be determined by professional success. Cooper Flagg is still "little bro" to his older brother even though Cooper's basketball career and earnings are far eclipsing his brother's. But it is usually best to use those terms with someone who a) is actually younger than you, and b) you are really close with.
 
Not sure if this is the best place to put this but the NBA All-star game last night was painful to watch, with the primary culprit being Kevin Hart. I usually find him to be fairly amusing but he was awful. He reminded me a bit of CA but was actually a lot worse. The twitterverse (or whatever it is called now) is absolutely ripping him. Adam Silver should have pivoted and pulled him when it was very clear early on that he was awful. The TNT gang is perfectly capable of being entertaining without Hart - they have been doing it for years and that is why they are beloved.

I love the NBA on TNT crew but stopping the championship game for an extended tribute was a horrible idea. It would not have been perfect but doing that between games might have been OK. But doing it mid-game, particularly with Hart absolutely ruining it, was a turrible idea, as Charles would say.

All of this occurred when everyone was saying the impetus for the new format was to make the basketball more serious and have the players truly compete. They made that impossible with the circus that went on around the game.

Adam Silver usually is pretty good at reading the room but lately the league's judgement has been off. As Bill Simmons used to write (back when he actually wrote), Silver needs a vice president of common sense to better sanity check things.

I did like some of the musical acts, though to claim you are paying tribute to Bay Area music and not have any Grateful Dead probably had Bill Walton rolling over in his grave.
 
I have paid little attention to Kevin Hart, for whatever reason, but a few months ago I had to watch a football feed with his commentary due to DirecTV not carrying the local ABC channel. Curious what he had to say. For about a minute. After that, it was mute button all the way, is it fair to say he's an idiot or is that overly judgmental? Not sure how anyone could listen to him at length.

I did see that Tatum, despite his glory last night, said the interruption of the championship game was not a good idea at all...
 
I was hopeful, with a non-ESPN game, the announcers would be better. No dice. Rambling on about nonsense like Cooper not entering the draft while missing fouls and substitutions. Seems like someone told the networks this is what people like. I'd like to have that person trotted out for a public flogging.

Yea this is awful. Only positive is that they’re not doing “bracketology” constantly. Otherwise a total disaster tho.

agreed. Jimmy Jackson isn't bad. He's knowledgeable. Gus Johnson just vomits set talking points non-stop. He has no clue about what's actually going on in the game...
