2024-25 Announcer Thread

My wife got comp tickets to the Miami game some time ago, so she gave them to me, along with plane tickets, as a birthday gift. Our seats happened to be directly next to the gate to the stairs that lead to the announcers' crows nest. (Kinda crappy seats, but the price was right.) So, I saw and talked to CA three different times coming and going.
While I too find him annoying as a commentator, he couldn't have been nicer to me. Stopped and talked every time, complimented Duke, asked if my wife and I needed anything, etc. Even turned away from the floor a few times during time outs to give me a thumbs up. So my annoyance with him will now be muted a bit.
Glad to hear that. I guess I’m being a contrarian here but Corey doesn’t bother me much at all. He does talk more than he needs to but he was fair to Duke I thought during the recent ugliness in the game against BC. Bilas would have blamed the Duke players for catching all those elbows to the face and head and he would have found some justification for the mystery tech on Cooper.

And then to save money, WOR would use Lindsey’s jackets as their test pattern.

(That could be true, haven’t checked tbh)
Loved hearing Lindsey Nelson on those Notre Dame recaps- and I wasn’t even a Notre Dame fan. I can still hear his voice in my mind (along with Keith Jackson and Skip Caray and Bob Harris RIP).
Don’t remember where I heard or read this but supposedly there was an occasion when Curt Gowdy asked Lindsey- who was wearing a particularly garish jacket that day- “Lindsey, if you have 200 blazers in your closet why do you wear that one?”

Cory Alexander is doing the NBA game in Paris - haven't the French suffered enough - mon dieu!

Sort of kidding. I actually think he is OK on the NBA because there is less shtick and name dropping.

It's the Pacers and Spurs playing in Paris. To my knowledge, Cory Alexander has not referred to Victor Wembanyama as "mon frere", but he did jokingly take credit for Victor's choice of jersey number. (Alexander wore #1 for the Spurs from 1995-1998.)

Has anybody else ever worn #1 before?

Sure. Here are the players between Cory Alexander and Victor Wembanyama who have worn the Spurs #1 jersey:

2012-2013 Tracy McGrady
2011-2012 Justin Dentmon (2 games) and Ike Diogu (2 games)

Oh, sorry. I was joking.

The ACC really gets the short end of the announcer stick. Crispin is very good, but doesn't seem to do many ACC (or at least Duke) games. Fraschilla might be the best color guy out there, and he does mostly Big 12 games. The Big Ten and Big East get Raftery on the Fox networks. CBS has the best production in the sport, but rarely gets ACC games anymore. Even on ESPN, the A team of Shulman/Bilas are doing SEC games most weeks.

spinning the metaphorical dial last night and I caught a few minutes of Bilas in which, to my dismay, he was instructing officials as to the proper calls.

Maybe cuz our teams aren’t very good?

As I noted after the Wake game, the O’Brien-Crispin pairing worked really well. (Several others agreed.) OB is less focused when paired with the obsessively self-referential CA.

We’ll hope for the best tonight. And going forward, I’ll hope for Bonner or Crispin, teamed with anyone.

Crispin talks about the game, but I find that he dwells way too much on platitudes, and not nearly enough time on actual analysis. Also, the guy does not know the value of silence - he just doesn't ever shut up. But OK, in a world in which Cory Alexander exists, those are but quibbles.
