2024-25 Announcer Thread

More stellar math from my guy Corey during the BC game. At one point, maybe nine-plus minutes into the second half, he says 'BC has only scored 11 points this half.'

Within seconds or that pronouncement, onemof their guards makes a three.

On their next possession there is a foul and as the BC player is going to the foul line, Corey says, 'BC has only scored 12 points this half.'
🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤪🤣

Please no more Debbie Antonelli for DWBB games. Fine she was just selected for the Naismith Hall of Fame but that does not make her a good announcer, or at least a fair one. She throws out the obligatory compliments for Duke but never hesitates to get in a good dig when she can. Its only DWBB, not DMBB. Her bias is clearly there if you're objective about it.

Keep her on WBB. So long as she’s not on the men’s games. She’s terrible.

Agree. She's always a complete "homer" for whoever's playing Duke. It really bugs me.

(But also agree that she's almost the opposite when she does Duke men's games; she clearly has a lot of respect for Coach K and the Duke men's program.)

It took me a while to realize that Doris Burke and Debbie Antonelli are different people. Without seeing faces (men or women), I am sometimes prone of being unable to differentiate voices. But with Doris and Debbie. They sound so similar to my ears.

(I also didn’t realize for some time that Jeff Daniels and Bill Pullman are different people, that Dana White and Joe Rogan are different people, or that Coast and Zest are in fact different brands/scents of soap).

How do you do on West Coast - East Coast issues?

I don't know much about Debbie Antonelli (I recognize the name) but Doris is absolutely one of my favorite announcers. She knows her hoops and doesn't get caught up in the ancillary nonsense.

My wife didn’t know until about two weeks ago that “Regulate” was by Warren G (and Nate Dogg)…she thought it was Snoop. She lives 90’s hip hop, but I give her a pass because she has lived in the US for only the past 14 years.

The debate boils down to Nas, Biggie, and Wu Tang on one side versus Death Row (including Tupac). The younger me (growing up in a redneck suburb of Raleigh) was West Coast til I die, with the beats and sounds definitely more catchy with better hooks; the mellower, older, and grumpier version of me calls it a toss up, with the lo-fi, grittier east coast stuff hitting different (never liked Jay-Z or anything Diddy-related, except Biggie).

And then there’s the Midwest, with Kid Cudi those thugs representing E. 99 (Bizzy, Layzie, Krayzie, Wish, and Flesh-n-Bone), with Chicago coming in very strong with Kanye, Lupe, Common, and Chance and Eminem bringing that Detroit combustion. The Midwest rappers bring the most intelligent lyrics to the whole game, and it’s not especially close.

Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) is amazing. Drake is incredibly overrated (anybody calling him the GOAT rapper needs to do better).

With regard to the ACC, (Duke v. UNCheat) > (Stanford v. Cal), and anybody thinking the latter is a better rivalry needs to do better.

My favorites were LL Cool J and Beastie Boys so with Biggie and Wu Tang I leaned a little more east coast. But certainly enjoyed Tupac, Snoop, and Dre as well.

Jon Crispin partnering OB for our game with Wake. I like Crispin; some don’t. He’s not called many Duke games. I will say, I like him when he sticks to game commentary and analysis, but have noticed that occasionally he offers a comedic observation, which doesn’t work.

I appreciate the hip hop digression. Considering the entire culture was birthed in the South South Bronx, the East Coast will always have a special sacred place in the conversation. Your (gillmic) East Coast argument seems to start with Hip Hop 3.0 and I at least think, per nocilla's post, you should include 2.0 artists such as the Beasties, LL and, more important to me, Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim (many consider the R the best MC of all time) and Boogie Down Productions. 1.0 might not be your cup of tea but it's fun to hear the foundations via NY stars such as Cool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, etc. I also really love 3.0 as the scene spread nationwide and the South exploded - you mention Gambino/Glover but Outkast, Geto Boys, David Banner, Lil Jon all deserve a listen. While I don't love the sing songy/R&B hybrid that is currently all the rage, I consider Kendrick to be the current GOAT, and think he stands with anyone from all time, som maybe the West Coast is currently king. I am glad he put a few slugs in Drake with this past summer's diss track war because Drake, who doesn't write his own rhymes - and is there a bigger sin in hip hop? - doesn't deserve to be on any list. For fans of 90s hip hop looking to potentially discover/rediscover an MC who didn't get the massive pub of some of the aforementioned gods, check out Prodigy for his solo work and his work with Mobb Deep. He was an incisive, simply brutal killer on the mic - I suggest checking out the following tracks - "Mac 10 handle", "Up North Trip" as solo joints and "Hell on Earth: and "Apostle's Warning" for his work with Mobb Deep.

Yeah, Crispin knows hoops. I enjoy a knowledgeable commentator like him who can explain the nuances of Cooper Flagg's game, how he is actually even better than we realize.

I also like him a lot. If I recall, the times he has gotten somewhat off track were in blowouts, which is normal for most announcers. Obviously, I would be thrilled to have him have plenty of time to go off track if Duke can go up big on Saturday! I would take him over CA any day.

Yes, Crispin knows basketball and gives some good analysis. I learn things listening to him, unlike many of the announcers.

What have they done with my guy CA?

According to ESPN Press Room -- in case some of you are wondering how some of us know about upcoming announcer assignments, that page gets updated weekly -- Cory Alexander is working the Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech game tonight with Wes Durham and Jim Boeheim, and then apparently has the weekend off, probably to smooth things out with Cooper Flagg's parents over, let's say, tea and sandwiches.
