2024-25 Announcer Thread

Are there? Who's demanding that Jay be an unabashed, biased, pro-Duke cheerleader?
Well, I don't think anyone is "demanding" that either Jay or Debbie be anything. So not sure why you are reading that into my post.

As for the substance, Debbie is a homer. There are people who criticize Jay, unfairly in my opinion, whenever he says anything that does not indicate that Duke is correct, the best, or (Heavens forbid) that there are actually good things to be said about UNC.

You don't seriously contend that we have not had scores of those posts over the years, do you? Like, years of repetitive rants of that tone?

You're the one who took a gratuitous swipe at those who find Jay (in his announcer mode) to be ploddingly anti-Duke.

Quite right that I didn't precisely mirror your language, though, and that was a mistake on my part. Anyway, looking forward to your evidence of *anyone* here being "aghast" that Jay doesn't openly root for Duke the way Antonelli does for her beloved Wuffies. Debbie is a homer; Jay is an anti-homer. No one wants Jay to be Debbie, nor is anyone mad that Jay finds good things to say about uNC--*except* for his years-long defense of their cheating, which is abominable.

Not sure why you’re looking for an argument here. I told you how I’ve read some of the Jay bashing over the years. If you see it differently, no worries. I’m not trying to change your opinion.

OK. I didn't love the gratuitous swipe at those who don't enjoy Jay (the announcer), and your (false) implication that those of us in that boat are of the view that he needs to be some Duke hype-machine. I can't say it any clearer than that. But it's not a world-ending deal.

On Boeheim last night:

Again, with respect, I never said it applied as widely as you ascribe. And if it doesn’t apply to you, it doesn’t apply to you. Never said that it did.

There are plenty of folks that dislike Jay for a variety of reasons. At no point did I state — let alone give a “(false) implication” — that all people who dislike Jay do so because he “needs to be some Duke hype-machine.” Clearly, you dislike him for other reasons and I’m cool with that. No worries.

On Boeheim last night:
I mean, it is cool that Jimmy B is doing this to stay connected to the game, but I find his commentary pretty vapid and obvious. I recall listening to Bobby Knight call a game and feeling like I was sitting in on a basketball masterclass. Listening to Boeheim is like watching a game with a disinterested grandpa.

"Clemson probably wants to get the ball to Chase Hunter here" is the kind of commentary even a casual hoops fan could provide.

When Boeheim discovers the new Waffle House surcharge on eggs, this could all start tumbling down...I'm assuming his wife told him to get out of the house because he was driving her nuts, but who knows?

No worries is right. My guess, which could be entirely wrong, is that you thought you were just making a lighthearted joke. Tough topic for that around here, though. And the anti-Duke reflex I perceive in his announcing can be annoying, sure; but the water he has carried for Carolina to help them sweep their decades of academic fraud under the rug is, yes, unforgivable (IMhO).

I think you're too kind to Boeheim - and to whomever puts him on air. He's a terrible announcer, IMO.

Yep, totally agree here. I get the impression that Jim B is just "mailing it in". Puts almost no preparation or work in before the games he announces and really doesn't add any real insight into what is going on with the game and the players.

I'm pretty sure he's been imported from an alternate universe in which they just sucked all the personality out of Dick Vitale. Dicky V may not be wildly insightful as a commentator, but at least he is having a good time and making things fun. Boeheim just kinda gives the impression that anyone watching really would be better off doing something else.

Yes, and it's also the kind of insight-less commentary we get from 90% of "analysts" on college basketball games. Just about all of them are essentially worthless, just filling the air with noise.

How many times will Dickie V call Cooper Flagg a diaper dandy on Saturday? I’ll take the over.

Seriously, I appreciate his enthusiasm for the game, even if he is a little difficult to listen to at times. And it’s great that he has recovered sufficiently to come back. Also, I appreciate his love for Duke, since he has 3 grandchildren on the tennis team. And he has done a lot for college basketball, the V Foundation, and cancer awareness and fundraising.
