2024-2025 Men’s Basketball Season General Discussion

Doug Gottlieb's coaching gig at Wisconsin-Green Bay is not going well. Lost today at home to Michigan Tech, which isn't a Division One program. Wisconsin-Green Bay is down to #313 in T-rank. Alarmingly uncompetitive.

Edit: Apparently Gottlieb referred to Michigan Tech as Nobody U before the game.
Somehow I missed that he was a coach now. And I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that it's not going well.

Was Michigan Tech also alarmingly unathletic?

Came here to revel in that idiot's failure. He has zero perspective and really really REALLY likes himself.

"Whatever I do is gonna draw a ton of attention,"

The irony of the moment was not lost on fans and analysts alike. Julius Hodge, a standout player for NC State in the early 2000s, famously clashed with Chris Paul during their college careers when Paul was a star at Wake Forest. Their heated rivalry epitomized ACC basketball’s intensity, with a memorable on-court interaction and fierce competition. Two decades later, Hodge found himself at the helm of a team playing in a tournament bearing Paul’s name—a full-circle moment of reconciliation through sport.

Be patient with Arizona. That win is going to mature, I think. They're back up to 20th in KenPom after a couple of beat downs this week.

Meanwhile Kentucky dropped from 11 to 26 tonight. I thought they were a bit overrated at #4 in the poll and a potential 1 seed in some way too early brackets. KenPom has them going 9-9 in the SEC.

must see TV.

It's rumored that next week, the winner will take on the entire southeastern conference at once
At the start, Northwestern apparently was confused as to which basket it should shoot at, and fell behind 17-4. Once they figured that out, they quickly recovered and are leading 35-33 at the half.

Duke's February interconference opponent, Illinois, had a huge win late last night at #9 Oregon, 109-77. Illinois is now #5 in T-rank and #8 in KenPom. https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/gametracker/recap/NCAAB_20250102_ILL@OREG/

Wow. I was so invested in the Duke games (WBB vs. Boston College and the Gator Bowl) that I was completely unaware that anything else happened yesterday. In this morning's NET rankings, Illinois jumped up from #10 to #5, while Oregon slipped from #11 to #23.

Illinois 109, Oregon 77 (recap, box score, highlights, full replay)

No. 22 Illinois used balanced scoring and an efficient offensive performance to fly past No. 9 Oregon, 109-77, at Matthew Knight Arena on Thursday night.

The victory marked the Fighting Illini's first road win over a top-10 team since 2021, while the Orange and Blue surpassed the 100-point scoring mark away from home for the first time since 2016.

Shooting 57.5% from the field and 55.2% from 3-point range, the visitors had six scorers finish in double figures in the emphatic 32-point road triumph.

Tre White secured his first double-double of the season and fifth such performance of his career, posting 20 points and 11 rebounds. In addition to his second 20-point effort of the season, White also ended his night with four assists and two blocks.

Ben Humrichous connected on four 3-pointers while finishing with 18 points, his fifth outing in double figures this season. Going 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, Humrichous also accumulated two rebounds and an assist.

Kylan Boswell scored 15 points while going 4-for-5 from 3-point range, while he tacked on four assists, two steals, one rebound, and one assist.

Kasparas Jakucionis filled the stat sheet once again with 16 points, six rebounds, six assists, and a steal. After dealing with foul trouble in the first half, Jakucionis went 6-for-8 from the field and registering all 16 of his points across the final 20 minutes of play.

Jake Davis poured in 12 points, his first outing this season with double-digit points. Going an efficient 5-for-6 from the field, Davis made two 3-pointers and registered all of his scoring in the first half while grabbing two of his three rebounds on the offensive glass.

Scoring in double figures for the second-straight game and for the third time this season, Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn tallied 11 points while also going 5-for-6 from the floor. He also scored all of his 11 points in the first half, and he tallied two rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

Tomislav Ivisic logged eight points and eight rebounds, including three offensive boards.

There are also postgame comments from Illinois head coach Brad Underwood -- dang, after a win like that, at least give the man a table and a chair -- and Oregon head coach Dana Altman:

Coach Underwood: "You don't hang 109 on a Dana Altman team very often, but I thought our kids were very focused. I thought we did a nice job surviving without Kasparas [Jakucionis] in the first half. My hats off to Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn and Jake Davis -- they won us the game, they were spectacular coming off the bench..."

Illinois could have beaten Tennessee too. That game in February might be a top 5 matchup if both teams hold up their ends…

Will Warren with a longform look at where each of the conference stand: https://statsbywill.substack.com/p/the-2024-25-conference-playncaa-tournament

Here's part of what he writes about the ACC:

"CHAMPION: Duke wins the conference title by at least three games. In a fun surprise, all of UNC, Louisville, and Pitt finish with the same record in a three-way tie for second.
TOURNAMENT: Regrettably, I expect the ACC to get five teams in. They shouldn’t, and it will be highly upsetting when they do, but here we are. Duke is obvious and I’ll guess they end up a 1 seed by sheer accumulation of wins. As mentioned above I’d say all of UNC, Louisville, and Pitt get in. For the fifth team…boy, I don’t know. I actually lean SMU because their paths to victory have looked more sustainable than Clemson.
SUPER DARKHORSE: There is no obvious darkhorse to win the title. But! If you squint, there’s rationale to take a flier on Notre Dame to finish top four. They get Duke, UNC, Clemson and Pitt just one time each.
MOST IMPACTFUL GAME: Duke at North Carolina, March 8. This likely will not matter at all for regular season title purposes. However, for a UNC team seeking as many Q1 wins as they can get after a 2-5 start against the grouping (and the two wins being by a combined four points), this will be the last meaningful opportunity to get one."

I’m skeptical that either UofL or ND is a better bet than Clemson for ACC top 4. As to ease schedule, I’d give the nod to Clemson, whose H/A opponents are GT, VT, and FSU. Further, Clemson gets both Duke and UNC at home. And, not incidentally re Warren’s ^ super dark horse, Clemson gets ND at home, too.

Duke looks likely ACC #1. Fight for the other 3 double-byes between Clemson, Pitt, SMU, and UNC. Should 2 of these 4 falter, yes, either UofL or ND might grab a double-bye as a super dark horse.

ETA — Warren ^ starts by talking about the ACC’s NCAAT prospects, but when he references dark horse, I think he’s referring to ACCT. Whatever, my post here refers to top 4 ACC regular season finishers.

I love watching the freshman Jakucionis at IL play. He's got the best all around game of any freshman I remember watching in a long time. He will be a handful for us.

I assume you mean all-around offensive game. Cooper is much better on defense and to me the better all around player.
