Welcome to Duke, Cooper Flagg!

A cooper is a person who makes barrels. The surname Cooper derived from this occupation in the same way that the name Smith came from people who worked with metals, anvils, and hammers.

I know this is true, but questions arise.

Why isn't a cooper someone who makes chicken coops?

What do you call a person who makes chicken coops?

So, the committment happened as Donald, Sam, and I were in the middle of recording a brand new episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup.

If you enjoy seeing grown men scream and jump out of their chair, here is the moment of the announcement:

(I have no idea why the video goes green)

Also, if you want to hear our full reaction, here is the latest episode of the pod: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/RRTET7320327183?selected=RRTET5688475437
(you can cue in to about the :32 min mark to hear the Flagg stuff)

This is a beautiful moment. Thanks for sharing!

As far as I know, we are not recruiting Ace. Believe others were recruiting the pair, but don't think the staff saw a fit/role with him, and didn't want to use him in the Cooper recruitment, when there are other schools that would be thrilled if Ace came aboard by himself.

Inside track for Ace is St Joseph's, unless the GF kicks him to the curb before he finishes HS.

Huge news. Best recruit for Duke since RJ Barrett or Jahlil Okafor. Unlike both of those guys, Cooper is going to be a truly dominant force on defense in addition to being an elite offensive player. Duke will likely run the offense through him a ton of the time -- like a point-forward -- and will have him anchoring the D with shot blocking that is a game-changer. I cannot even begin to state how big this is for Duke's prospects next season!!

Duke has not offered Ace and even though he elevated his play at Peach Jam, I don't think he is someone who would ordinarily be on Duke's radar. Ace is currently unranked as a prospect by 247 and appears to only have one offer from a P6 team, West Virginia. I would love to see Ace reach the point where he made sense as a Duke recruit, but that just isn't the case at the moment.

I wonder, with Cooper still only 16 years old, if he may grow into a 6' 10" or more player. If he does, how would that impact his game. Would he still be considered a possible point forward or more like an Anthony Davis? I have no doubt that he will be a force however he plays.

I always encourage growth spurts among Duke players. :D

What a way to start the week!

Interesting detail:

Cooper has chosen to wear No. 2 instead next year, in honor of his close friend Donovan Kurt, who attended Nokomis Regional back in Maine (he wore No. 2)

Hopefully he can negotiate something with Jaylen!

Sorry, I have to say this. I gotta admit that this bothers me a bit... that he is shown with No. 2... even as the tribute that means so much to him. We currently already have a No. 2 on the team.

And he wears No. 32 his whole life... but that's already hanging in the rafters... and I don't think he'll want to ask Laettner

Don't you think this issue has been resolved with Mr. Blakes?

This is our main concern...

That has been be my hope... and also that Scheyer has a good handle on this.

Pretty nice, I tell my spoiled Duke basketball self, that this may be one of our worries.

I am thrilled that Flagg will be on our team next season! I mean, just Wow!

I mistakenly assumed the shot blocking phenom was 6’10 or so. Watched CBS college hoops podcast and thought Parrish was off when he said 6’8 until I verified it with the google machine. 6’8 shot blockers don’t grow on trees or shrubs.
