This Week in the ACC - 2/10-2/16

With Clemson’s 2 impressive wins v. Duke and UNC, we’ve got a good 3-way contest for ACCT 1-seed, with attendant implications for NCAAT seeding. Focusing here just on ACC .....

Clemson (12-2) — Holds tiebreaker over Duke. Easiest remaining schedule, with toughest games @ SMU and @ FSU. Tigers have the rest of this week to prepare for FSU, and then an entire week before they play SMU. So a real shot at finishing 18-2.

UofL — (11-2) — Holds tiebreaker over Clemson; Duke has tiebreaker over Cards, whose toughest remaining games are (h) Pitt, @ NCSt, @ ND. Look very solid for 16-4, probably 17-3, possibly 18-2. Go Pack Weds night!

Duke — (12-1) — Toughest (ACC) games are (h) Wake, @ UNC. Can’t afford a letdown v. any of (h) Stanford, @ UVa, (h) FSU. Both @ UVa and (h) Wake are Mon-after-Sat games.

Torvik still gave them a 41% chance of making the tourney before tonight's game. I've got to believe that drops to 20% after tonight's debacle.

I still think they give him one more year. One of my clients is someone extremely high up in the decision making process and one more year seems to be the consensus in that circle. They feel like canning him after what he’s accomplished would come off as short-sighted to other prospective coaches. However, this guy knows I’m a Duke fan with clients extremely high up on our end so he could be blowing smoke.
FWIW, I'm hearing the same from my Ram's Club source. But if this UNC team keeps sinking, I'm not sure that the current consensus over there is certain to hold.

I don’t normally say things like this, but — this is pretty sad. Hubert seems lost and depressed. I seriously feel for the guy.

Me too. Jokes aside, Davis is my favorite UNC coach so far, so it is difficult to see him sit there facing the media and reflect on what is transpiring.

He knows what is being said about him in the media and behind closed doors. He looks like someone who had belief in his team and hoped they all had each others backs, only to find out that after trying to circle the wagons he is feeling pretty alone and in danger of being hung out to dry.

Watching the press conference made me wonder whether UNC will be looking for a new coach and that will be Hubert’s choice. Does he really need to put up with slogging through a season like this and then have to re-recruit every play on the roster?

Fwiw, 2 years ago, when UNC missed the tournament after being ranked no. 1 to start the season, Hubert had many sad, depressed, and testy press conferences. Then they came back last year and got a 1 seed. So I am not counting him out yet.

True but contrast tonight’s press conference with K’s response to the 109 66 thrashing by Virginia. He raised his glass and vowed “ here’s to never forgetting“ and in that moment showed his determination and belief in his vision for Duke basketball. At the press conference, this evening was the unmistakable visage of a defeated and broken man— a man who seem to clearly lack confidence in his approach. NIL has brought a level in insanity to the game of college basketball, There’s no question. But there’s also no question that Hubert has not dealt with it well and Duke has been very lucky to have a coach who so far seems to have a grip on the modern game. The Duke fans that I think I know the Duke fans that I see post here may reach their breaking point and decide you know what I didn’t sign up for this—it’s possible. Even Ozzie. We don’t know where the game is truly headed, and you could forgive Hubert for believing he could revive the Carolina way as it was known under Dean Smith.. but he needs to do an old-fashioned gut check and quick cause that press conference reminded me of a man giving his last words on the way to the gallows.

Don Kirshner >>> Steve Kirschner.
Amazed Steve Kirschner is still there - he was at UNC during my time (in the dark ages). Agree that he was one of those who thought that UNC was the be all and end all of the universe and worshipped at the throne of Dean Smith.

I found out many years later that Don Kirschner lived a few houses down from a house where I lived briefly. Not clear if we were there at the same time but I think we were. By the time I lived there he was in his 60s so likely not having rock parties. Never met him. That and $2.90 gets me on the subway.

Had to Google Don Kirshner… but yes, I agree!
I had to google Steve Kirschner lol. I remember Don.
In Steve's bio on the UNC website it lists all the championships they have won and all the Hall of Fane coaches he's worked with- as if he is somehow responsible for all their success.

BTW, re the Clemson vs UNC game, what does it take to get called for an illegal screen? A couple of times Trimble looked like he was blocking on the o-line for a running play in football. Never came close to setting his feet. Maybe I just don't have a proper understanding of the rule.

I don't know where to post this, so I'll throw it in here. I've turned $500 in my DraftKing account to $3,000 by consistently betting on Duke to cover, but more effectively, by betting on Carolina not to cover. The latter bet rarely ever loses. I wish somebody more energetic than I would research how few games UNC has covered this year. It ain't many.

That would be a nice start to the bring Cooper back next year fund.
