The saga of Daniel Jones thread

There is significant evidence that taking 6-8 M a year less would have brought him more than that in endorsement income and he would certainly be a lot more popular among the fans and maybe the lockerroom....which speaks to endorsement income for the future as well. Short term maximization is not the only way to go. In fact it rarely is.
Except he'd be just as injured, and with the same record. At least this way when he gets tossed aside he'll have 6-8M more reasons not to let it bother him so much.

Except for DeSaun Watson, DJ's endorsement income is by far the lowest of any highly paid NFL player according to Forbes. He probably loses 8-10 million a year of endorsement income - considering he's in the largest media market in the world - Mahomes endorsement income is almost 15X Daniel, and of course that's mostly national, because he's in a tiny media market. Athletes in NYC have tremendous endorsement income just in their home market. DJ has almost none of that. They don't like him. And the reason is largely due to how he negotiated. I live in NY and have heard that he has not pursued a lot of endorsements. So that is another way to look at it.

I'm know an outlier here, but I just think DJ isn't that good. IMHO, he's a decent stopgap QB who can maybe win you a few games while the franchise looks for THE guy. I know the Jints are a dumpster fire of a franchise, but, damn, I'd be really pissed if my team gave him all that $ and commitment after a fluke playoff season. In contrast, Philadelphia cut bait REAL quick on Carson when it became clear he wasn't THE guy. Admit the mistake and move on.

I'll duck now.

No need to duck (Daniel's arm is not that accurate, J/K!!) He's good, he's just not NFL good and with an ACL in his medical profile, one must question his ability (and willingness) to run. The future seems very uncertain for Daniel at the moment.

I think these two points are related. If you're not that good, taking the biggest payday you can is probably the way to go. Yes, it burns goodwill with fans when you don't perform at the level implied by the salary, but even if he had taken less from the Giants (or another team), I think there's a good chance his play wouldn't have justified that contract either.

It's not about "supposed to" or not. It's was it in his best interest over all. I submit the evidence says no. AND....totally random of course, regarding athletes in NYC......I'll just leave this here: https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40547744/knicks-jalen-brunson-accepts-1565m-113m-less-25-deal
That is unbelievably generous, potentially leaving $100M+ for the Knicks to improve the roster. From the article:

While there is an inherent risk of injury and unforeseen complications that come with Brunson's decision to push back his most lucrative NBA paydays, his priority remains to maximize the prime of his career with the franchise's most talented and deepest roster since the 1990s.

The repercussions of Brunson choosing the four-year, $156.5 million max deal over the five-year, $269.1 million deal in 2025 are massive for the Knicks' ability to keep this team together and continue making roster moves to close the gap on a championship.

Brunson's study of championship organizations and franchise stars -- Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs, the Tom Brady New England Patriots and the Derek Jeter New York Yankees -- gave him a blueprint for MVP-level players who structured contracts to give their teams the best chances at sustainable title runs.

Well, generous yes, but also strategic...which is my point. He didn't do it to be generous. He did it to help his team win, figuring his career...money wise and SATISFACTION wise.....would be better in the long run by doing this. I wonder what Brunson's "Q" rating in NYC is now compared to DJs. LOL. Wonder what endorsements he'll get within a week due to this. Wonder how much he's loved inside the locker room and front office of his team? How's DJ doing in those departments? Are those simply not important for a long career, for a happy career, for setting up the career after football / basketball /etc? I was ridiculed for the very notion on here.....so it's kinda funny that in less than 24 hours - along comes another NYC athlete who clearly agrees with my concepts. I wasn't being ridiculous, obviously.

So, you're glossing over the "blueprint for MVP-level players" part. While DJ plays QB, nobody considers him an MVP-level player.

Again, I don't think most people would have considered it ridiculous for Jones to make a contract sacrifice, but as I argued, it also wasn't ridiculous for him to take the payday because he isn't in the same stratosphere or situation as a Brunson or a Brady.

Not glossing over anything, and yes, some did consider my argument ridiculous. And yes, contractually, he is right where Brunson is and actually Brady's first contract was zero almost. I'm taking the W.

Point beaten into oblivion. You win. We lose. Moving on.

Has anyone seen the Giants Hard Knocks? I have not watched yet. Heard from a friend who is a Giants fan in NY (like me) that it is good. Not sure how much Daniel is featured.

I know only bits and pieces, but what I do know is Daboll drools over Maye from the Cheats.....so....oh, and can't resist: one more:

yeah, the Giants have done little to improve their OL, last year they drafted a center who has trouble snapping the ball. Only an idiot would expect that organization to fix its problems.
I think it's time for Kate or Rooney to take control of the team from their uncle.

This whole discussion of whether star players should take less money just shows how ridiculous the salary structure is for these players. It is obscene.

DJ's gonna have to come out of the box hot next year, or the doubters league wide will increase. There was no mistake or coincidence that the Giants management allowed Hard Knocks to show all their attempts to move up in the draft to get a QB.....and allowed ESPN to show Daboll drooling over Drake Maye. It was not lost on Daboll who Drake Maye played for in college BTW.

Gentlemen, that's a hard knock troll. No accident.

I didn't follow him at Duke but is there any reason to think he can thrive in that offense, especially if they still have such a terrible line? I know he's getting paid a lot but every time I see him get crushed... You see guys in their 40s and 50s who are only quasi ambulatory who say the money wasn't worth it.
