The saga of Daniel Jones thread

Saquon was happy for him, and for his efforts Saquon got screwed and is getting ready to be screwed again. Amazing how devalued RBs have become.

honestly surprised it took so long. I think a consequence of better analytics to realize the marginal value of a RB vs the injury risk as well as how much their production is dependent on the rest of the offense vs their inherent ability is not worth what the market was paying. That money is better spent on a WR or a line to protect your QB in what is a passing league.

Pat Leonard, the Giants beat writer for the NY Daily News,, has a revealing and somewhat devastating article today about the apparent destructive behavior of Giant head coach Brian Daboll - that, if true, really throws much shade on Daboll and his reputation. It includes - yelling at his coaches during the game without any constructive suggestions, not following game plans, often seemingly losing composure, etc. Daboll, by Leonard's description, drove out the DC., Wink Martindale. Big time dysfunction. If accurate - and Leonard hasn't been a critic of Daboll to this point - it doesn't sound like a good place to play for Daniel or almost anyone. I recommend the article.

The story of the Giants’ 2023 undoing isn’t about a personal feud between Daboll and Martindale and the past, though. It’s about bad football and a flawed process that still exists inside the Giants’ walls.

It’s about an organization with enough problems that one Giants staffer recently advised an NFL assistant calling about a vacancy:

Daboll’s sideline behavior was destructive, in many coaches’ opinions. His input was never proactive, always reactionary. And his outrage was rarely accompanied by a suggested solution.

“He has no composure,” one team source said.

“Do not come here.”

And regardless of what is discussed during the week, Daboll’s game day decisions become up-for-grabs, impulse calls without guardrails.

“It’s like, ‘Wait, what did we have that meeting for?” the source said. “There’s a lot of inconsistency or doing the direct opposite of what we had talked about. The rest of the league is too far ahead, and you see it affecting the results of games.”

The facts, after all, show that the Giants didn’t get rid of any problems here. They lost a respected coordinator [Martindale] because they couldn’t get their own house in order.

Yes, decades ago running backs were the coin of the realm, guys like Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, on and on. QBs not so much back then. I am no fan of Belichick as a yuman bean, but he was way ahead of the curve on this, he'd find a good RB or two use them til they broke a bit, then found another one or two to plug in....(he pretty much ran the whole team the same way, none of this paying gobs of money for some guy who just had peaked).

Yeah, Daboll's abuse of The Winkster was an open secret most of the season....not a good look at all. That team has problems, Daniel may do well to have a decent year there then get out.

I kind of soured on Daboll when he seemed to go out of his way to not praise Jones when he was playing well well last year.....never thought he really believed in Jones (same for Schoen) but Jones played so well it forced the team's hand on the next contract.

Thanks, Hartford, for the article. I'm not surprised though. Seeing his antics on the sideline, I thought that guy is a jerk. I would love to see him looking for his next job.

Running backs have the shortest career average of any position player at 2.57 years. Punters of course the longest. What remarkable physical specimens running backs like Jim Brown must be O.J. Simpson, who is 21st in total yards played 11 seasons in the NFL with a career yards per carry average of 4.7. Then enjoyed a moderately lengthy film career presumably with his mobility, mostly intact. Clearly a powerful man. Nuff said.

NY Giants looking at QBs in draft

https://nypost.com/2024/03/25/sport...f-giants-taking-qb-at-no-6-in-2024-nfl-draft/

It's been clear that the Giants brass has been skeptical of Jones, and now the owner has given his blessing to them looking at a QB with their first pick. I hope Jones plays well this year and then gets out of that dumpster fire...Daboll has been showing his Queegesque tendencies, and his and Schoen's OL is just a mess. Jones has enough time left in his career to go to a better organization, and I hope he will.

Very on-brand for the Giants to give DJ $40m a year and then have buyer's remorse.

Yes, hoping Jones gets a shot at a second act to his career.

The rumblin’, stumbling’, bumblin’ Giants (nod to Chris Berman) might take a QB at #6 in the first round, which is the precise spot in which they took Daniel Jones.

Kind of ironic, no?

AHA!! I think I see their devious plan. They intend to draft Daniel again and sign him to a rookie contract which will supersede the big money deal.

No- trade #6 to Minnesota for #11 & #23

Build a team around DJ and then replace the QB next year if necessary
