Devil's Den - ASU recap

I get that there is a pattern here, with the proliferation of pods you now have a bunch of different sources covering the same material on pretty much the same schedule.

Enjoyed the latest DBR pod and found myself mostly agreeing with Jason on his picks.

But I think there was one category where all three guys may have whiffed. I think Cooper and Kon will both be 10/5/5 machines this year. Basically any game where one of them tallies 5 assists, or Cooper gets 5 blocks, should be a 10/5/5 game. We may even have some games where they both hit it. And Foster or Proctor could pop 1-2 as well.

I'm guessing more like 12-15 total on the season.

This is always a difficult stat to actually achieve, mainly because there are so many guys that fall 1-2 assists short or 1 rebound short or even a couple points short (the 10 has to be points). We were blessed with having Wendell Moore (for whom the category is named for) because he did it seemingly every game. But I believe since he's left we've only had around 7 total 10-5-5 games (that's over 2 seasons). If we're getting 12-15 Wendell Moore games from these guys, go ahead and put us in the NBA playoffs haha.

I came up with 12 also, but I was predicting two games where ManMan gets 5 blocks.

I get it, but this team is built different. Put us in the playoffs!

We are going to play through Cooper and Kon a lot on offense and both have a real knack for driving the ball and either lobbing to Khaman or kicking out to an open shooter. It looks like we will play fast this year too which will up the opportunity for assists. I think both guys will AVERAGE 3-4 assists per game.

For the 10 points and 5 rebounds, I think if Cooper and Kon are on the floor 30 minutes, they hit that 70-80% of games. Kon is a better rebounder than I expected.

So I'll say Kon and Cooper each hit it 6 times and then 1 each for Khaman, Proctor, Foster for a team total of 15.

I should point out that we've already seen Cooper get 6 assists in a game, but we have not yet seen him get 5 rebounds.

My prediction is Cooper 5, Kon 3, Maluach 2, Proctor 1, Foster 1.

We also have yet to see him play close to 30mpg.

Normalizing ASU for 30mpg and Kon would have put up 29/7/6 and Cooper would have put up 13/6/4.

The Field of 68 headliners - Dauster, Fanta, Goodman and Ogelsby - debate how good Duke is compared to the rest of the Top 10

The Devil's Den - Episode 262 - Season Preview Megapod

This is an excellent episode, especially the first hour where 247 writer, Brian Geisinger,, delves into some really interesting Xs and Os talk with the regular hosts - Josh, Raul and Dustin.

I'll add a plug for Geisinger's free substack which has a heavy focus on Duke hoops

Thank you Billy for finding and posting these.

The Duke Basketball Podcast Announces 2024-25 Content

Looks like these are the official pods coming out of the program, which are generally broadcasts of Jon's official coach show and shots hits from pressers and the like. I can't yet find the official feed on Spotify, I assume something will be available soon, unless I am just missing it.

Looking on the Varsity Network app, looks like there is the Gameday Podcast feed (also available on Apple) that has an update today. They also have a Blue Devil 360 pod and a football pod called The All 22. All are available at least on Apple (I don't have Spotify).

I wonder if they're going to rebrand the Gameday feed as the Duke Basketball Podcast, which would revive the name of the pod that was the precursor to The Brotherhood pod. At the very least, you can get a 3 minute update post from today previewing the Maine game on the Gameday pod.

The Devil's Den: Episode 263 - Maine Reaction and Recruiting Talk
The last couple of episodes these guys have done have been really meaty and interesting. The recruiting talk is especially spicy as they allude to a few things that I hadn't heard so strongly worded:
-Their feeling that Scheyer has every detail of the Duke recruiting machine humming at a level beyond what K had going. This is especially true with the marketing machine behind the program.
-Per the above, that K got lazy toward the end and just wanted the best players he could get regardless of positional fit
-That there was a real toxic atmosphere during last season based on a player or players who were unsatisfied with their role, and that person, or people, were shown the door.

Probably the best thread to post this, but it also could have gone in a few other places.

Debbie Antonelli posted a podcast interview yesterday with Kelly Flagg and Maine women's head coach Amy Vachon. (When the Maine women took a summer trip to Australia, I wrote about it, and pointed out that Flagg, Vachon, and the late Stacey Porrini -- Donovan Clingan's mother -- were all on the 1996-1997 Black Bears team coached by Joanne P. McCallie, who went on to coach at Michigan State and Duke.)

Flagg talks about a wide range of subjects: capping off her playing career with a first round win over Stanford in the 1999 NCAA Tournament, navigating the rise of her son Cooper's fame, moving Cooper and Ace to Montverde Academy, filling the role as their former AAU assistant coach, and continuing her ties to UMaine (her eldest son Hunter is a student there, and Ace will be playing there next year). I found it very interesting.

Later on Antonelli compares Caitlin Clark to the old cartoon character Mr. Magoo, which was a bizarre but effective description, once she explains it. And while this is not a fashion review, I'll mention that Flagg is wearing a New Balance sweatshirt.

"It was really important for all three of our boys to be able to play at least one year together. Hunter was a senior when Ace and Cooper were freshmen, and our high school had never won the state title, and it was always kind of a pipe dream for us as we were raising our kids, not only for us, but our best friends all had boys the same age group, and that year they all played on the Nokomis team and they were able to win the state title.

But it was pretty obvious to us, even before then, that them being in Maine for four years wasn't going to be what was best for their development in the long term, and a lot of people think, oh, you just sent them to Montverde because Montverde wins, and you just wanted to win or to get money or whatever it was. Our sole motivation was for their development, and we didn't really even care about -- not that we didn't care about the national championships, because that's always fun -- but for them, the development of their game, to practice every day against other 4- and 5-star guys, that was the motivation. If you walk into your gym, and you're the best player in the gym, it's time to find a new gym... and that's always been our philosophy."
