Pat Ngongba "out indefinitely," in a boot

Exactly, it’s great to have a third big just in case. (And as I type that sentence I am having triggering flashbacks to the 2004 UConn game. Oof)

I’ll add, it’s great if Pat can get at least a small amount of experience (and practice time) for the sake of next year, where he may be the most natural center on the roster.
I looked at the boxscore again. Double Oof

Shelden Williams -- 19 minutes, 5 fouls
Shavlik Randolph -- 14 minutes, 5 fouls
Nick Horvath -- 8 minutes, 5 fouls

One of the most frustrating games I’ve ever watched. UConn was favored but we were clearly the better team as Shav played fantastic. Refs were way too involved in the game and stole it from us🤬
I think UConn was 1.5 point favorites so was basically a pick 'em. I watched on campus .... Mood was NOT happy.

Apparently the inconsequential 3 by Duhon at the end crushed sports books as it led to Duke covering and they had UConn big time.

But yes, those calls against our frontcourt were ... Questionable. After Emeka picked up 2 first half fouls and Calhoun sat him for rest of the half, I'm sure he was on the refs to get Duke guys. Smart coaching, brutal officiating.

Worst officiating in a Final Four game that I’ve ever seen.

That 3 by Duhon made me some money.

Back to Ngongba I think he's going to be more impactful than many folks think. It's hard to figure playing time with such a deep bench and his recovery, but watching him in the Chipotle Nationals vs. Derek Queen at Monteverde, he really held his own during his limited (15) minutes. Not an altogether different physique and game to Queen actually. Pat Shot 5-7 (vs. 6-8 from Queen) from the field including 1-2 from 3 and 4 rebounds . He has a nice soft touch around the rim but has weight and power to post up effectively - something that it seems maluach is still learning. Ngongba is a natural 5 (a bit of a "dancing bear"). Can't wait to see what he brings as he hits the floor. Speaking of Paul Vi team, watching D. Harris throughout the Chipotle tournament I kept thinking show me a better shooter - and he's active as well. Kon brings some other unique things to the table but as a shooter, both Harris and Kon seem comparable to McCain - and maybe better at getting their own shot.

I agree that Pat should be a big help, if he's healthy, especially against big teams. (I'm not sure how many of those we'll see, however.)

Having said that, although he can post up effectively, but I don't know how important that is in today's game and with this team. I'm sure the coaches will figure out how to use him best.

Darren reminds me of freshman JJ in some ways (yes, I know that is a loaded comparison, but hear me out). Pure shooter, always looking for his shot, which is great, but not a great defender or driver. I think he'll have some good games this year, but until his defense improves he'll not get a lot of minutes in close games. He does seem to be working hard on his defense.

It's a testament to the whole staff how hard the team works on defense. It's not always the most effective effort but the effort is there.

I am interested to see how/if Pat is utilized this season. Most seem to think he won't be, but I remain unconvinced that Maliq (though an excellent player overall) is an adequate backup 5. Pat, on paper, seems a much better fit.

I think Pat, Isaiah and Darren could all start for us as sophomores and have big seasons. I'll be surprised if any of them play much during close competitive games this season barring injury.

But hopefully we will get to see a lot of all three of them in lots of 20+ point blowouts.

Next season Ngongba will have quite a cast
4 high quality freshmen
Evans Brown Harris
Maybe Foster
I wish Knueppel but his IQ not likely

I hope you're right about them returning if they only get minutes in those blow outs. Hopefully we have one of those tonight and we see Harris and Evans in for 10 or so minutes. If they can't get at least 10 minutes in several blow outs, I'm really concerned on them returning for their sophomore seasons. Not in this transfer/FA landscape.

GoDuke!
