National POY Discussion

Dykes (SEC guy) was shamelessly plugging Broome for NPOY all game. Did anybody catch Dickie V respond saying it was Flagg because of his greatness at both ends of the court, and that he beat Auburn? It was great!
Caught that. Dykes claims since Broome is a winner in a better conference he’s POY. If we win the Natty does it count since Auburn was in a better conference??

Despite foul trouble Flagg had 15, 9, 6, and 4 blocks. Still think he’ll win most of the awards despite Broome’s big game today in a loss.

We JB’s need to stick together (I’m looking at you, James Bond and Jason Bourne), and I throw no shade. Broome’s terrific.

Nevertheless, Broome is relatively unimpactful when he isn’t rebounding or hitting a shot. In contrast, CF is the focus regardless of who has the ball.

I accept the reality that NPOY seems to be the best player selected from the top 5 or 10 teams, and I’d agree that JB’s an All American, but I don’t see how this is even close.

If you watch the teams play, Flagg is the spearhead of our offense, he's basically our point-forward. He often brings the ball up the court, and he's at the top of the key touching the ball in almost every possession. When he's not shooting or assisting, he often is getting a "hockey assist." He truly makes every other player on the team better.

Broome is a fantastic player no doubt, but the ball doesn't run through him on every possession. He's a great post player, but not nearly as good of a shooter. He should definitely be first team all-america, but as good as he is, he's no Flagg.

Assuming it’s a given that it’s a two way race between flagg and broome, here’s how you decide who’s national POY: hypothetically switch players and teams, and consider whether the switch would make that team better or worse. Switch Cooper for Johni, I think Auburn is better. Switch Johni for Cooper, I gotta think Duke is worse. There is your (my) answer: it’s Cooper

The Field of 68 which is a popular college basketball social media site (with Goodman, Hummel, Fanta, etc) chose Scheyer as Coach of the Year and Flagg and Broome as Co-Players of the Year. Not a big deal but some of these guys probably have votes for the serious awards.

I would take all those field of 68 awards with a grain of salt. Apparently they think John Tonje is such a great player, he deserves to be both a first and second-team All-American.

I don't know if it's still this way, but growing up Sporting News was always the outlier in their picks for things like players of the year, all-star teams or who would win a pennant or championship. I had the feeling that they prided themselves on being different. Again, that was a very long time ago. Haven't read their magazine for maybe 40 years.
