National POY Discussion

Broome played 32 minutes and scored 8 points in the Texas A&M game, but soreness in the shoulder he injured in December limited him. Coach Pearl confirmed this in his post game remarks. It was the second game in a row in which Broome was held to single digits. He played 33 minutes and scored 9 in the win over Kentucky. He'd been averaging 18.4 ppg.
Let’s not forget if you follow Bruce Pearl’s remarks, he constantly promotes Broome for player of the year. Who can blame him. It’s his player and also helps the reputation of his program. No doubt, he’s having an unbelievable year, is a great player and it’s amazing how he has improved from being merely a 400 plus ranked prospect out of high school.

On the other hand, scheyer is much more subdued. Never says Cooper should be player of the year just talks about what he does for Duke and that he is not about himself or his stats but always about how he can help the team win.

I don’t know if Scheyer has expressly said that Coop is POY, but he has certainly said he’s the best player in the country.

poy is not statistical. It’s not “most outstanding on the best team.” It’s not “grittiest 5th year player whose biggest payday will occur in college.”

Outstanding means “exceptional” and “notable.”

IMO, current and future observers will view CF as clearly the most exceptional and notable player of this year. Broome is terrific, but he’s not POY.

Outstanding also means “remaining to be done.” Cooper crushes that definition as well, since much of his body of work will be developed over the coming decade or two.

ESPN has an Insider article up, written by Myron Medcalf and Jeff Borzello looking at their picks for POY and All-America teams.
For both, Flagg is the only pick for Freshman of the Year, and we all know that's a given.
They also both choose Cooper for POY, and here's Medcalf's take.
In a new article (not paywalled), Medcalf and Borzello go into a deep dive for their reasoning behind the picks. We already know they chose Cooper, but they didn't state why it was him over Broome. They do that here.

From a statistical perspective, Flagg is the clear winner. His KenPom Player of the Year rating is 2.911 -- the highest rating in the site's database dating back to 2012-13.

This was what I intended to underline when saying that if it ISN'T Flagg, history might look unkindly on the voting results. Sort of like the Sam Bowie #2 overall pick.

Yeah, when you get to be Broome’s age you’re bound to have some arthritis

ACC related, but reporter Terrance Oglesby posted his votes and is getting blasted (including by the Duke social media team) for choosing Jaeden Zackery over Flagg for Defensive Player of The Year. He did vote Flagg as ACC Player of the Year but the stats speak for themselves and Flagg is top 5 nationally in defense as well.
Zachery isn't even the best defensive player on Clemson. Viktor Lakhin has been outstanding on D this year for them and the Hunter brothers are both very nice defenders. ZAckery is a fine player, but I'm skeptical he is even a first team All-defensive team player in the ACC.

Eh, I'm guessing that Oglesby - a Clemson alum - may be saying that with some insider knowledge from the program in making that pick. So I'd cut him slack there. He's almost certainly better informed about the players on Clemson's roster than Duke fans.

Honestly, though, the best defensive player in the ACC plays for Duke. And his name is Maliq Brown. Unfortunately, he's been hurt too much to be honored as such.
