MBB: The 2025 Transfer Portal

Why is that?
Duke only accepts a max of 2 years worth of transfer credits (I.e., you have to have at least half of your credits be earned at Duke to get a Duke degree). So, at the very least, someone with 3 + years worth of credits and only one year of eligibility left would be unable to graduate from Duke. I believe that there are NCAA “progress toward degree” rules that make it harder (impossible?) for an undergrad player with 1 year of eligibility left to transfer to Duke.

Unable to graduate from Duke, or just unable to graduate from Duke in four years? Could a player who wasn't set on graduating in four years still transfer in with their two years of credits, knowing that they'd need two more years to graduate?

That's the part I'm not sure about. There are "progress toward degree" requirements from the NCAA that come into play on top of (and perhaps in combination with) Duke's rules. And potentially penalties on our academic progress scores. I'm not 100% clear on the NCAA rules, but the fact that we've never had a rising senior transfer (they're all either rising sophomores, juniors, or grad students) into Duke suggests it may be a limiting (or eliminating) factor.

Since graduation doesn’t seem to be an end goal in transferring these days, does it matter if someone can’t graduate on schedule at Duke? Unfortunately, seems like they could come in, exhaust their eligibility, and go graduate somewhere else if that is a desire?
I'm shocked ... shocked that you seem to think that college basketball is an athletic business that pays mere lip service, at best, to the academic side of student athletics.

With the portal closing tomorrow, we will know the status of Ngongba and Darren Harris, although there hasn't been doubt about the status of these two. Isiah Evans might still declare for the NBA draft even while not entering the portal. Maliq's status also has an unknown in that shoulder surgery recovery time, if he elects to do it would likely go well into the summer months. Duke's many medical doctors are qualified to discuss that, I certainly am not.

There is still an uncertainty about Ament's recruitment. Perhaps if we hear something definitive about Flagg and Maluach, Ament's recruitment will be settled. Probably not good to speculate on our two starters since I hope to see something conclusive this week.

I just got back to NC from my Winter residence in Florida (old people tend to do that), and am looking forward to news from Jon.

Ament committed to Tennessee yesterday. By all accounts this bodes well for Isaiah's return, as some reputable sources are hinting at:

IF nothing unusual happens and we get back 5 guys that we can project as contributors this year (Caleb, Isaiah, Darren, Pat, and Maliq) it's hard not to view that as a big win for Jon and this team, particularly in the era that we're in. Compliment that core with a Top 5 NBA talent (Cam), two high ceiling freshmen that can be brought along more slowly in bench roles (Cayden and Nik), and one big transfer piece (seems like we're zeroing in on Cedric Coward, but new names may emerge before the portal closes) and that's another off-season of really solid roster management.

Yes, there are some question marks about that team right now, in April, but guys are going to improve drastically over the summer. We said all year that Isaiah had lottery-level potential, and there's every reason to think he could take a leap towards that with another full offseason in Durham. Pat was also so far ahead of schedule that we forget how rusty he was... a full offseason and he could be an offensive force. Find the right missing puzzle piece in the portal to complement those guys, and we're still a team going banner hunting next year.

Yes, we'll learn about all of the potential returnees this week. The portal entry deadline (relevant for Brown, Sheffield, Evans, Ngongba, and Harris) is tomorrow. The draft entry deadline (relevant for Flagg, Maluach, and a VERY outside chance for Evans) is Saturday.

Ament has already committed to Tennessee.

I was on the road all of Easter Sunday and missed the News. Sorry to hear of Nate's choice, but at least it adds clarity to other players who might have been undecided and awaiting his decision.

Yes, hopefully now we can keep Evans and add whichever guard/wing we want from the portal.

If this is indeed our roster (5 returnees plus the committed freshmen) then we have a pretty good base with possibly some money to add some pieces. Here's how I would prioritize:

1) A starting caliber guard - I think we need a 3rd rotation guard who can be a primary ballhandler. I like what I've seen from Cedric Coward. I'm not totally sure about his ballhandling, but he seems like he could add a physicality to our backcourt.

2) A flexible wing/forward who can spell Cam at the 4. Ideally this would be a solid defender who can shoot 3s.

3) A reserve big. I don't think we have enough playing time to offer one of the better bigs in the portal. But we need depth behind Maliq/Pat.

Yeah, among the 9 currently-expected players on the roster (Brown, Sheffield, Foster, Evans, Ngongba, and Harris as returnees; Boozer, Khamenia, and Boozer as freshmen), I'd guess that 6 or 7 are key rotation guys and 1 or 2 are fringe rotation guys. So that would leave 1-2 legitimate rotation player spots available. I would agree that another ballhandler/playmaker would be priority one. And a third big would be a lesser priority. It might be that Khamenia and Brown are the backups to Boozer at the PF spot, so I'm not sure if that's as critical an add.

Coward isn't the best ballhandler in the world, but he's athletic and can shoot. I'd see him as a versatile wing (capable of even playing up as a smallball 4 due to his strength, length, and athleticism) rather than a ballhandler. Especially given the substantial jump in competition he'd be making coming from the Big Sky and WCC to a P5 school.

No there's not (unfortunately). He's going to Tennessee.

(sorry) - posted this and then saw other's corrections. . . .

I remember Dean Smith always had the attitude that the perfect team would have 8-9 star players and then 4-5 who were just happy to be on the roster.

Every once in a while, one of the "just happy to be here" players would have an impact.

I'd love to see Scheyer sign some four-star or three-star players who want a Duke education and aren't going anywhere. This whole process of wondering how many players are going to come back each April is exhausting.

But those guys don't typically make any sort of impact at Duke though. And they generally don't stick around either (see Jaden Schutt, Christian Reeves). The closest we had to that was Jaylen Blakes, who played only a small on-court role at Duke and grad transferred after 3 years anyway.

Unless there are changes to the system, I think the reality is that any potentially impactful player is at risk of leaving each year.
