MBB: Duke 87, unc 70 Post-game thread

that was a statement, not a question ;-)

dominant.

It would have been nice if Roach could have shown that he is in fact a good PG while at Baylor. He's a good college player and he'll probably play pro somewhere if he wants to travel, but it doesn't look like he's an NBA player.
I'm still hoping that Caleb finds a way to bring something positive to the team this year.
The sad fact English is my first language. Thanks for the correction. When I went to Europe, since I am Canadian, people asked me if was bilingual. I said no. Still working on the first one.

Interesting, is Caleb Wilson (is that his name?) coming because of Hubris, or in spite of him. Was it simply the best offer ($) and it doesn't matter who the coach or teammates are, so he would honor the commitment?

That is the state of college BBall, I suppose. Getting kids to come who have no commitment to winning or developing? I guess rutgers is a good case in point with their 2 diaper dandies that can't seem to win.

It makes what Jon Scheyer has constructed this year even more remarkable. It also makes clear how remarkable Cooper and Kon are to coexist as they do.
I think that we are very fortunate that Duke has, for the most part, been able to recruit players who are "team first". We've had a few misses (Jalen Johnson for instance) but both K and Jon are said to recruit on character even more than on talent.

Exactly.

As I said before, a few weeks ago I thought that Hubris survives this year even if they don't make the NCAA and at least gets another year with a stud recruit coming in. I think I have now become convinced otherwise.
but maybe we WANT Hubert to get another year.

QUESTION. Would you rather lose to UNC at end of year and Hubert stay for a 20-10 type year next year..

OR sweep UNC this year and they go after another coach ?

Does anyone know what sites out there show what the lineups were at different points in the game? Because it seemed to me (at the game) that the lineup Hubert put out there during their 18-2'ish run was very different than their starting lineup plus usual subs.
Drake Powell seems to have been effective in the meaningless non-comeback. Did he get any time in the first half?

Hubert is planning to make some changes and, shudder, copy Duke. He’s feeling the heat.
From the article: "It's needed. I never would've thought four years (ago) that I took over the job that I'm 100 percent what is needed is a general manager."

But that's kind of a problem if you can't anticipate and adapt as the landscape changes. Basically, he's saying he didn't know something was needed until he saw everyone else doing it. Just wait until he watches an NBA game and realizes how important outside shooting and rim protection are in the game today.

I don't know the man. I read that he's a very nice human. But I don't think he's very bright.

... Foster ...

It’s clear that he continues to be a supportive and culturally additive teammate despite his on-court struggles. He’s in a funk and he’s likely better than what we’ve seen this year, and the symbiosis of his good attitude and his teammates’ good attitude will help him get through this.

Also clear that Scheyer still has faith in him. He knows that Caleb's going through a tough stretch but has said that he still believes Foster can be an important contributor this year.
If I recall correctly (memory fades considerably with age), Scheyer was a starter as a freshman, then was relegated to the bench for his sophomore year, and he had to work through that. Then he blossomed in his junior and senior years. Maybe Scheyer feels more empathy with Foster knowing what he himself went through in his own sophomore year, and therefore very willing to help Foster along, especially Scheyer's own comments that Foster has a great attitude, team first, and very good work ethic.

Jon however, had a very good Sophomore year, and did not see his stats fall off a cliff. His scoring went down less than a point, but improved in pretty much everything else. As I recall, K asked Jon to take more a 6th man role, in part to accommodate the arrival of Kyle Singler, not because of poor performance.

I could be misremembering, but I think Duke MBB might have been the first *program*, basketball or otherwise, to do so?
It was the first such position for college sports that I heard about (which doesn't mean it was actually THE first), but
it instantly made sense to me. And Rachel Baker immediately seemed like a terrific person for the job.

So major kudos to Nina King and Jon Scheyer for the move.

Yes, I recall it being pretty much a non-issue at the time. Jon started and Gerald mainly came off the bench their freshman year (with Gerald's minutes limited due to a diagnosis of exercise induced asthma). Their roles flipped their sophomore year with Jon coming off the bench and Gerald starting (Singler took McRoberts' spot in the starting line-up), but Jon played more minutes than Gerald and had the 3rd highest minutes per game and 4th highest points per game averages. Of course, the next year Scheyer and Paulus flipped roles and Scheyer led the team in minutes his last two years.
