MBB: Duke 87, unc 70 Post-game thread

Browsing IC I think the Cheats' idea of a GM is different than Rachel Baker's role at Duke.

They want an NBA type GM who will take control of the roster - identify and acquire HS and portal talent, leaving just the coaching to Hubert. I can't see this working in college since there's no President of Operations or anything. Somebody has to be in charge.
Yeah, delegating roster construction to another person in the program sounds weird.

That's one of Jon Scheyer's chief responsibilities with assistance from his coaches. Can't imagine him bringing in somebody additional for that task

And, at the same time, given his roster construction and direct coaching responsibilities, I can’t imagine CJS having the time/energy to navigate the ins and outs of NIL, agents, athlete sponsorships, etc. The complexity of it, including the testing of one’s patience, could become overwhelming, and one could argue that this aspect has contributed (at least in part) to the retirement of so many high profile college coaches over the past 4-5 years.

there was a very odd moment in the post game show when Jay Williams, looking like he was fighting off tears, said it was possible unc might not make the tournament. It was pretty weird.

From a piece by Frank Bruni for NYT subscribers only:
I went four years of college at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, without ever attending a basketball game. Before last weekend, I’d gone more than three and a half years on the faculty at Duke without watching its fabled team zip up and down the court. …But on Saturday night, I relented. I found myself with a precious ticket for a prime midcourt seat at Duke’s home game against my alma mater, which is of course its archrival. Curiosity got the better of me. …
I had so many impressions to process. Among them:
Nothing you’ve heard about the decibel level in Cameron Indoor Stadium prepares you for it. I felt it in my toenails. In my eyelashes. It’s pure aural adrenaline — so much so that if they raced garden slugs in a terrarium at center court, you’d be as enraptured as if watching Secretariat in his prime. …

Cameron is not the place to order white wine.

[Flagg is ] breathtaking. At one point early in the game, he raced the length of the court and, barely stopping to plant his feet, shot a perfect three-pointer. I tell people I favor football because there’s no athleticism like that of a wide receiver making a spectacular catch. I am wrong. …

For more than two hours, I lost all awareness of who was president. Phrases like executive order and words like tariff were scrubbed from my vocabulary. My world shrank to this exhibition of extraordinary agility, this one charged space, this impossible fervor. Duke won, 87 to 70. I won bigger.
