MBB: Duke 87, unc 70 Post-game thread

My wife said, more or less, the same thing after watching the first three minutes of the game - she said it looked like a college team playing a junior high school team (with the difference in heights and length). Her take was this was "blatantly unfair" to UNC.
Sounds like my wife. When a team loses a close game, her take is that "it was so close, it's just like they won."

The Heels won't be out of talent next season IMO if they get their better players to stay and add some additional.

Cadeau, Ian Jackson,, and Drake Powell have talent and incoming recruit 6'9" Caleb Wilson can help in the front court.

A new coach and some favorable activity in the portal (help inside) with the nucleus above could get UNC to at least have a shot at the NCAA tournament.
Ian Jackson is NBA bound. And Drake Powell is ahead of Proctor on most NBA mocks. Also, Cadeau's mom has apparently been posting on Twitter about how valuable her son will be in the portal. Hubert has his work cut out for him.

Spot on analysis IMO, and agreed it is too early to crow over the corpse.

The USA Today article linked somewhere was brutal but put it squarely to the UNC faithful I think:

Do you think that Hubris is a Top-10 college coach? If so you should stick with him; if not you should move on immediately.

I think that's it in a nutshell for UNC. It is a top job and UNC rightfully considers itself to have a top ten program on a bad year. If you do not have a top level coach, how do you expect to keep a top level program? The buyout for Hubris is shockingly low by modern standards. If the only reason to keep a sub-par coach is "because he is part of the family," well - the rest of the family is apparently ready to vote him off the island.

Is there any metric by which one could call Hubris a Top-10 coach? Even trying to be objective, I don't see him as even top three in the ACC let alone an elite coach or recruiter.
Top 10 coach? That is an absurd notion. Off the top of my head, and in no particular order, Jon Scheyer, Bruce Pearl, Nate Oats, Rick Barnes, Chris Beard, Todd Golden, Buzz Williams, Brad Brownell, Kyle Smith, Steve Forbes, Andy Enfield, Pat Kelsey, Dusty May, Tom Izzo, Chris Collins, Dana Altman, Mick Cronin, Brad Underwood, Matt Painter, Eric Musselman, Kelvin Sampson, Tommy Lloyd, Scott Drew, Bill Self, TJ Otzelberger, Jerome Tang, Mark Few, Randy Bennett . . . that's almost 30 right there and I'm sure I'm forgetting some obvious ones.

Exactly.

As I said before, a few weeks ago I thought that Hubris survives this year even if they don't make the NCAA and at least gets another year with a stud recruit coming in. I think I have now become convinced otherwise.

I could be misreading this, but it seems like you've got your mind made up here. :ROFLMAO:

Tried to quote a post about playing O against the Zone but couldn’t

There have been several games where we’ve struggled against a zone defense. I think every decent team going forward, meaning every team going forward, is gonna try that against us. John is a smart young man. I’m certain we will be practicing how to shred a zone

Go dude! 9F!

Am the only one on this board who finds these recent games rather boring? I mean, it is always nice to win and, I guess, to win by big margins, but I'm finding it not very interesting basketball to watch. I mean, I switched stations last Saturday night when Duke was leading 32 to 14 (or something like that) and watched a series on Netflix. Is there any college team in the US now who can give Duke a competitive contest? I can't tell if the ACC is that bad this year OR Duke is that good, but the ACC contests have been total snorefests. It worries me a little, that if Duke has to play some competitive games in MM, that they may not be fully prepared for having to fight for a victory.
I certainly wouldn't say NC State or Wake were boring, and while I wasn't nervous, the outcomes weren't forgone conclusion.

As for your second question, I would imagine any team in the top 20 would be competitive, and Duke could lose to any one of them on any given night.

Lessee.... Hubert played the #2 ranked team -- the tallest team in Div 1 -- with players that averaged five inches shorter. He waited until the 2nd half to experiment with a taller line-up. How could he not realize how stupid that looked?

Clueless and headed to a nice seat in the stands next to Ol' Roy.

I know the announcers beat this topic into oblivion, but it is AWESOME watching our players switch 1 through 5 and just stonewalling a team as quick and athletic as UNC. There's a universe in which Hubert had the four guards running picks and screens and isos and getting the matchups they want for blowbys or open shots. But even Maluach on RJ stayed in front and didn't let him get through the paint.

I'm still almost as impressed with Jon's roster building for this season as his coaching. I'm not saying we are going to run the table, but if we play defense like we did for 30 minutes on Saturday, we are going to be a really really tough out next month.

As Norm Sloan once said, before a matchup with Duke and Mike Gminski, "You gotta go with what you've got."

Exactly.

Interesting, is Caleb Wilson (is that his name?) coming because of Hubris, or in spite of him. Was it simply the best offer ($) and it doesn't matter who the coach or teammates are, so he would honor the commitment?

That is the state of college BBall, I suppose. Getting kids to come who have no commitment to winning or developing? I guess rutgers is a good case in point with their 2 diaper dandies that can't seem to win.

It makes what Jon Scheyer has constructed this year even more remarkable. It also makes clear how remarkable Cooper and Kon are to coexist as they do.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Hubert chooses to start the closing lineup from Saturday when we play them next. I don't think that's the genius takeaway from the last ten lackluster minutes. I'm happy for them to roll out Cade Tyson for the opening tip.

To be fair, all his bigs suck. Washington actually played okay in the first half but got in foul trouble.

The size difference was shocking. As we passed half court after winning the tip, I asked my Carolina buddy over text why Carolina played Hasbulla, Webster, Gary Coleman, and Herve Viilechaize at the same time.
