MBB: Duke 100, Army 58 Post Game Thread

Free throw defense tends to be erratic from week to week.

It depends on the announcers' exact phrasing and timing of online posts much more than other phases of the game.

The first matchup between Duke and Army finished 100-38, so Army is improving. It is sobering to remember that that 1996 Duke team finished with 13 losses and a painful but memorable first round exit from the tournament, losing to Eastern Michigan.
Except that was coming off a much worse season the year before which was far more sobering

And yes, a team that shoots a lot of jump shots isn’t going to get to the line much.
Duke can possibly get to the line more if Caleb and (especially) Tyrese are more "authoritative" when in the paint. Cooper and Kon appear to have no qualms with contact. Individuals with a poor sense of self preservation can, at times, challenge Sion.

Another thing I wanted to just say is that every single newcomer on the team (transfers and freshmen) have at least met, and in most cases, exceeded my expectations so far.

These transfers are AWESOME. I don't think you could create a more ideal glue guy than Mason Gillis. He's a real threat from 3 and will shoot it if your hand isn't up in his face. Sion is awesome at everything and would start on just about any other team in the country. And Maliq's defense is insane. I'm curious what his wingspan is, because some of the deflections he gets don't even make sense to me until I see the slow motion replay.

I think all 3 of these transfers can and will play in the NBA. And going by what we've seen from the current rookie class in the league (it's real bad), I'm surprised none of them decided to try their luck in the draft.

Probably overreacting based on a handful of non competitive games, but they definitely pass eye test so far.

Nice win. A lot to like with some areas for improvement (can we find a way to keep Duke's best player from cramping). Man Man and Cooper were beasts on the defensive end and the glass. I'm still on the fence with Tyrese off the ball. His catch and shoot is great but it really leaves Duke with only two playmakers in the starting lineup. Cooper has been even better than I expected as a facilitator, but Caleb is just okay.
Tyrese's job is not necessarily to be a playmaker, but he is still capable of doing so.

Duke 100, Army 58 (recap, box score, highlights, condensed game, full replay, presser)

After opening the night shooting 1-for-11 from 3-point land, the Blue Devils made 16 of their final 27 shots behind the arc (59.3%). Duke distributed 19 assists on 35 made baskets and collected eight steals, while forcing 13 Army turnovers. The Blue Devils outrebounded the Black Knights, 50-32, including a 35-16 advantage on the glass in the opening stanza...

Kon Knueppel shot 5-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, for 15 points to top Duke's six double-digit scorers. Tyrese Proctor caught fire in the second half from distance, draining four triples en route to 14 points - all after intermission.

Cooper Flagg tallied his first collegiate double-double, reaching the benchmark in the first half with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Flagg stuffed the stat sheet with totals of 13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and two steals, while shooting 50% from the field (5-of-10).

Khaman Maluach also secured 10 rebounds in the first half and finished with 14 rebounds and 11 points for his first collegiate double-double... Sion James and Caleb Foster rounded out Duke's double-figure scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Duke MBB has posted their Every Bucket video:

The Devils Den has locker room interviews with Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, and Tyrese Proctor.
Thank you brevity. Is it me or was the box score more robust last season?

he played 19 1st half minutes. That's on Jon.
He's 17. When I was that age I could play a full game and never come out. 19 minutes doesn't make him cramp. The issue is it could have been 12 in the first half and 7 in
That's on Cooper and the medical staff. Players at this level need to be hyper vigilant to what they eat and how they prepare. It's not like he's playing minutes that have never been achieved before.

Cooper is learning. Same thing happened to Banchero. They'll figure it out. But it's not on Jon.

I agree

I'm gonna zag from the people who are wanting the guards to do more playmaking. I think what we are seeing is the gameplan. Scheyer wants Cooper and Kon to be the playmakers. Those 2 guys are the best shot creators on the team, and Proctor is clearly benefitting from less ball handling responsibility. Being the main ball handler takes a lot of energy, and he's clearly scoring more efficiently than he was last year with the looks he is able to get now being off the ball.

I think this actually helps his draft stock immensely. I know 30 NBA teams who would be interested in a 6'5" guard who can play off ball, defend, and hits 50% of his 3s (he's 7 for 14 through 2 games).
I think this is exactly right. Use the gravitational pull of Flagg to feature Kon on O. And have the 2 guards punish double teams and over-rotations. We have a creative PG. It is Flagg though.

Maliq has a 7-foot wingspan - part of what allows him to play center at 6-8.

I agree that all 3 guys have been as good or better than advertised. I think Maliq has the best chance of making the NBA. He's a couple years younger than Sion and Mason. And I think he could hold his own defending NBA wings right now. He just needs a bit better handle and a reliable 3 point shot and he could make a lot of money playing basketball.

Rookie Wire reported that Sion James did declare for the NBA Draft in April, but withdrew in May:

Former Tulane guard Sion James has reportedly withdrawn from the 2024 NBA draft and will transfer to Duke, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

James declared for the draft on April 9 while maintaining his final year of college eligibility. He participated in predraft workouts with the Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies before opting to pull his name from consideration.

I believe Sion declared and did go to the combine, or maybe he just worked out for NBA teams on his own. He put up huge numbers at Tulane but that wasn't enough to get him whatever guarantee he wanted. Coming to Duke will boost his stock tremendously, he'll be on National TV every game and have announcers drooling over his physique, plus he's getting to play with the ball in his hands a lot. Reminds me of Semi Ojeyele as a big wing who converted to a huge guard.

Gillis only averaged something like 6ppg at Purdue. I'm not sure he has an NBA future but again, coming to Duke and leveraging all our resources will give him the best shot. Maybe he can be like a Grant Williams.

Maliq will need to show some offensive game but his defensive skills are obvious.

Agree with you that all three have exceeded expectations, and they fill their roles on this team perfectly. Jon hit a grand slam in the portal even without getting any "big name" guys. The highest rated incoming transfer in the ACC was Cade Tyson and he has looked awful so far, basically unplayable. It's all about getting the right fit.

I agree with kAzE that Scheyer appears to have hit a home run with his transfers. They seem a perfect fit alongside the incoming freshmen and returning guards. I low-key love what Brown brings to the table. Just a completely disruptive presence on defense. It doesn't always result in a turnover, but his timing on his reach-ins is darn near impeccable. When his man gets the ball, he just disrupts and throws off the flow of the opponent's offense. Gillis just fits in. No ego, does all the little stuff, no nonsense. And James is like the prototype for a third guard, but who can also defend just about any position with his size and strength. Really great gets.

I do still have a bit of worry about quickness (we are rangy, but not quick) against better teams. The length and athleticism and effort is certainly enough to overwhelm most teams, though. Especially with the number of shooters we have. It's a VERY good team. There may be some worry as well about getting too perimeter shot-happy and not attacking the basket. But I hope/expect that will ebb and flow over time.

The rotation so far seems pretty clear: the top 8 are there, with the three transfers coming off the bench. I imagine as the level of competition rises, we'll see Harris and Evans become more marginalized, but those three transfers will continue to play significantly off the bench. We're going to lean on Kupp and Knueppel as much as they can handle, but the vets will get their minutes.

If this is a problem in a certain matchup, I would go to a 2-3 zone. Khaman in the middle with Maliq and Tyrese up top.

With our size and length, I think it would be really hard to get anything in the paint. I think Cooper would feast on lane steals from the corner too.
