Isaiah Evans

Greatest game in NCAA for me Maryland NC State 104-103 and ACC tournament David Thompson for the win. They were chatting about locked in on ACC. Happy birthday Isaiah

Very likely the very best ACC game ever played, ultra high level, 103-100 in overtime...

"The Shot" tops them all. Even the NC State vs. Maryland game. Two of the top 5 college players in the college game played in those games. Christian and DT.

I think we all fall into the trap of over-weighting results from tiny samples. You probably need 75-100 3pt attempts before you get a half-decent estimate of a player's true long range ability. Flagg is almost certainly better than his current 23% and Evans not as good as his current 50% rate.

And this is also why nobody should give up on Mason Gillis helping to win some games with his 3-point shooting...

I've certainly not given up on Mason. I root for all the Duke players. I just think he should earn minutes like all the players. If Kon, Evans, Harris, Man-Man and the other freshmen have to earn their minutes, so should the upper classmen. Having Mason playing at a high level improves this team immensely.

So now we've seen the ceiling and the floor for IE. For a guy who can hit 6 threes in 11 minutes or have 0 points and 2 fouls in 10 minutes, I'm okay with this role.

This is kind of what I envisioned it would turn out for him. It's worth playing him every game to see if he has it going, and if not, you don't have to play him too many minutes. He's the heat check guy.

In the preseason on the pod this is exactly the role I spoke about for him. Put him in and see if he is hot. If he is, you let him cook! If not, that is ok and you don't need to play him as much as a result.

I do like that Isaiah did not feel the need to force it last night. He only took 2 shots in his 10 minutes of playing time and that is perfectly fine.

Fun with numbers: in the same role, Taylor King averaged 13.8 3PA/40 minutes as a freshman at Duke and Isaiah is currently averaging 15.6 3PA/40.

Shooters shoot.

Seems Coach Scheyer knows a little bit about how valuable Isaiah Evans is to this team. A two-way player, hum? I believe Evans has worked hard on his defense and other aspects of his game and he's been rewarded by his coach. Sure, there's going to be times he doesn't make the majority of his 3s. There have been a few games that our best shooter has not been on from three, but I don't want him to quit shooting. I know Isaiah and Caleb don't play the same position but it sure seems that Isaiah has taken many of Caleb's minutes.
Isaiah numbers are pretty good: minutes=316, ppg- 7.0, FG= 47%, 3pts= 46%, FTs=81%. He's played in 24 games with 3 DNPs with no starts.
I thought about putting up Caleb's numbers, but I told myself that I'm not going to talk negatively about him anymore this season. But looking at both, I see why Jon is using Slim more these days.

Watching that video clip of Coach S, two things come to mind. First is that I'm really happy to hear what he's saying about Evans. When that kid is in the game, we get hard guard because he draws attention (which is good for other players, spacing, etc) and with his long arms he could become a very good defender as gets better with his positioning and footwork. My second thought is how happy I am that Jon replaced Coach K. Jon seems like a smart, genuine person.
